Stoned thought on Artifact’s game design Posted: 06 Jun 2021 03:54 AM PDT I realized something. Me and my friends love to play artifact in a group like we would magic. As a game, it flows better that way. Hearthstone does not work that way. It doesn't feel better to play in a group. It is a game designed for simple 1 on 1 matchmaking. Ultimately, this is why the game failed to match hearthstones success. The game is not made for the modern gaming audience. Richard Garfield has 0 experience with online game design or maybe even gaming online in general. At least competitive online games. He doesn't understand the culture or how a gamer decides to the game. He has not clue what a person wants when sitting down to "queue" for a match. (Hint: ranked, quantitative rewards). How do you think they play tested it? In groups probably. Where the games take time and it's fun to talk about what's happening with your group. They probably made design considerations with only this type of play testing. This is why group play feels fantastic. The game was simply designed for it. It wasn't designed to be a game you queue into silent randoms. All in all, huge mistake for Valve to hire Garfield. He's a great game designer, but was designing a game competing against Hearthstone with 0 experience in online gaming. Clearly didn't try to learn either. The game takes advantage of the way computers assist the board game genre but does not attempt to match its culture. [link] [comments] |
