I'm surprised that the player base for these games is so low

Weren't people saying the game itself is fun? It's now completely free with all content unlocked. I mean Heroes of the Storm was basically abandoned by the devs and its popularity has gone down but isn't a dead game. But according to steam charts Artifact Classic has 27 players and Foundry has 9 players. NINE PLAYERS.

    Wow

Would you personally consider the $1mil (grand prize) Artifact tournament to be 'a lie'

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 11:58 AM PDT

It's recently been brought to my attention that many people find no fault in Valve for advertising the $1,000,000 (Grand Prize!) tournament as a part of the promotion for the game. This surprises me. As a general consumer, it seems clear to me that the existence of the tournament implied a base level of commitment that the game would receive. Despite everything, even if there would be no future updates or support, by choosing to buy and participate with Artifact, I would at least have the additional enjoyment of a wild tournament to look forward to.

This, of course, did not happen. The game flopped, so Valve quietly backed out of their tournament "commitments".

    Was this a lie?

Again, it turns out that "most" people support Valve for backing away from this advertised commitment. Huge shocker to me. Well, I suppose we could debate whether the tournament was ever committed to. And we could debate whether the tournament was ever advertised. And, certainly an entry to the tournament was not something purchased alongside the game. But, when Gabe Newell approached news outlets and claimed a "$1,000,000 Grand Prize Artifact tournament" was coming, was it a lie? Obviously, "plans change," but it's not like the claim was that there would be a tournament upon Artifact's resounding success. If I promise you $100, it's a promise. I don't get to back out because I decided to buy a moped instead, right? Or I'm a liar?
