Artifact player count went up 57% in April. Those of you playing again, what modes/decks are you playing?

    SteamDB link.

I've been bouncing through constructed gauntlet playing around with different decks. Currently playing with a mechanically terrible minus armor deck and having lots of fun with it.

Less Complexity = More Strategy for Artifact

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 08:30 AM PDT

Valve released patch notes outlining some basic changes to Artifact including a limited board with 15 slots for each player to use. These change have been met with controversy between the long hauling Artifact crowd and it's worth having a game theory minded discussion about this change and whether it's inherently bad.

a game theory definition of complexity:

" The state-space complexity of a game is the number of legal game positions reachable from the initial position of the game." - Victor Allis (1994). Searching for Solutions in Games and Artificial Intelligence (PDF) (Ph.D. thesis). University of Limburg, Maastricht, The Netherlands. ISBN 90-900748-8-0.

Limiting the number of slots per lane greatly decreases the complexity of Artifact, but how does that affect strategy? Let's look at some key factors:

    Player Control vs AI/RNG control

Artifact 1.0 added layers of AI/RNG to player decisions which put an invisible barrier between direct player interaction. For Hero placement, players would choose the lane for the heroes but the AI would decide which slot within the lane for the hero. This abstraction of choice means that player choices often don't directly interact with opponents. Artifact 2.0 removes one of these abstracted AI layers by allowing players to choose slots for heroes within lanes.

One way players did interact with each other in 1.0 was through spells and abilities that instantly affected the opponent's board state, i.e. sniper's headshot. I believe that this type of interaction was too limited in 1.0, and although this isn't a design change (more of this type of interaction could have been added in another set instead of rule change) it's nice to see that among the revealed cards so far there are several active abilities that fit this category. This to me shows that the design team is going a good direction for more player interaction.

Hero Placement goes from 3 options to 15

The most obvious factor in this change is a 5x increase in the player choices for heroes. This runs directly counter to those who claim that the simplified board design necessarily simplifies strategic choices.

Play starts at the beginning of the game

The previous iteration of the game had very limited player choices in the first round and no options for deployment. Often players didn't play a card until 5 minutes into the game or more. When players did play cards in round 1 the options were often extremely simple (i.e. play a 3 cost creep in one of two possible lanes). With these changes players have important choices to make right off the bat.

Less reliance on TP scroll RNG or blink daggers

One of the main strategies in the 1.0 was strategically letting your heroes die because redeployment on key turns was much more important than board presence. This type of play is unintuitive and unthematic, in my opinion it hurt the game a lot. On top of that TP scrolls were easily the best item in the shop and obtaining them was completely random. Now with players able to bounce their own heroes without just letting them die, there is an easy way to redeploy heroes quickly.

Easier hero redeployment means more options for play. No more relying on TP scroll RNG or relying on an opponent or lucky arrow to finish off a hero.

    Does More Complexity Add Strategy?

The relationship between complexity and strategy is one of balance. It's not hard to increase the complexity of a game. For artifact complexity could be added by increasing the number of lanes from 3 to 5, or even more. If the game had 11 lanes the strategy would be basically kill an empty lane as fast as you can because your opponent has less options for defense. This change would decrease the strategy involved in decision making.

    Conclusion

In conclusion the simplification of the board does not necessarily decrease the amount of strategy involved in the game and could actually increase the amount of strategic decision making. It's way to early to decry this change as "dumbed down" or any other such nonsense.

I'm personally in the boat that would have liked to see 1.0 given proper support by Valve. I think the base set was seriously lacking in variety and I think a second set could have added a lot to the game. Until I saw the actual gameplay changes released this week I was very skeptical that the Artifact team could properly support this type of game. That said I'm also excited about the 2.0 revamp and am definitely willing to give it a chance. I think the simplification from a game theory standpoint is a really smart change.

    Should I sell my cards?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 06:14 PM PDT

As a "founder" who put around $100 into the game at launch I'm wondering if I should sell my cards at this point. I love the game, but don't play it anymore, however I plan to play whatever 2.0 version is made. They said they would do something special for founders, but I'm afraid it might be tied to how many cards you have or some shit OR they will re-use existing cards. So if I sell them I may not get anything or need to reopen/buy them later. Anyone have some thoughts? I have mostly a full collection.

What Artifact 2.0 features do you most want revealed next?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 04:26 AM PDT

Based on the current trend, the Artifact devs are giving an update on 2.0 every Mo(o)nday. What features of Artifact 2.0 do you most want to hear about? Perhaps the devs will see this post and take it into consideration when writing future updates. :)

Would range be a viable concept?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 02:30 AM PDT

With the introduction of a set number of slots, abilities like Timber Chain are able to have a limited range, but would it be viable as a concept?

So instead of Timbersaw having an ability that reads: "C3,M1: Move Timbersaw up to 5 slots away. etc." We'd have "C3,M1,Range 5: Move Timbersaw to target slot."

What's the point? Well, you could have items like Aether Lense, or improvements like Telescope that allow you to cast your abilities at a greater range. You could also have cards that limit the range of enemy abilities or prevent cross-laning.

Now, I'm not sure whether that'd be interesting or not. It's just a thought and I was wondering what you guys would think about it.
