The 5th Weekly Stupid Questions Thread

    Posted: 25 Dec 2018 09:00 AM PST

Ready the questions! Feel free to ask anything (no matter how seemingly moronic).

When the first hit strikes wtih desolator, the hit stirkes as if the - armor debuff had already been placed?

There's no desolator in this game yet.

    Hints About the Upcoming Expansion

    Posted: 25 Dec 2018 02:49 PM PST

The Troll Soothsayer has some interesting dialogue and flavor text, which may hint at the possibilities for the next round of cards:

"The Red Mist Horde is just the beginning. Another force is coming. I've felt it in the winds and seen it in the bones. Something Dark. Something Seductive. Something Evil. If we don't prepare for its arrival, it will certainly consume us all."

Definitely significant that Dark, Seductive, and Evil are capitalized. We'll likely see more heroes and cards centered around The Oath, and its development on events it apparently brings about.

Relentless Zombie's text tells us that

"The dead are rising in Roseleaf, Knogh... someone took The Oath."

And the Cursed Satyr has been dabbling in something dark,

"I'm not proud of what I've done, we were children playing games... how could I've expected what would come, what she was willing to awaken. Death is coming for us all now... but it is most certainly coming for me first."

But who is this "she" who awakened something? Is it Vanessa (a wizard who comments on many different blue cards, and has shown interest in The Book of the Dead)? Another hero? Or is it someone we don't know?

There are Dark, Evil, and Seductive heroes we already know about that involve demonic/devilish Oaths, and others are already hinted at on existing card arts and descriptions. I think the following heroes have a strong chance of appearing in the next card expansion:

    • Bane (Dark)

    • Doom (Evil)

    • Faceless Void (On many cards already)

    • Nightstalker (Definitely Dark, appears on The Cover of Night)

    • Queen of Pain (Seductive)

    • Shadow Demon (Bit of a stretch, but he may be the most Evil)

    • Shadow Fiend (Already on The Oath)

    • Underlord (Highly likely, as he has a story with Legion Commander)

    • Undying (Associated with zombies)

    • Warlock (Associated with demons)

Of course, there are far more heroes who appear on the current cards, but one reference to a hero may not mean anything at all, or may be everything: we have no precedent set at all. For reference, all of the heroes who are currently not in game but are on card art are

    • Anti-Mage (Collateral Damage)

    • Clockwerk (Keenfolk Turret)

    • Dark Willow (Payday)

    • Death Prophet (Pick Off)

    • Disruptor? (His mount appears on Crippling Blow and Routed, as he is an Oglodi)

    • Invoker (Enough Magic)

    • Juggernaut (Time of Triumph)

    • Kunkka (Clear the Deck)

    • Lina (Conflagration)

    • Mirana (Friendly Fire)

    • Monkey King (Cheating Death)

    • Oracle (Foresight)

    • Phantom Lancer (Sucker Punch)

    • Razor (Cheating Death)

    • Rubick (Arcane Censure, Collateral Damage)

    • Slark (Dirty Deeds, Gank)

    • Silencer (Arcane Censure)

    • Spirit Breaker (Time of Triumph)

    • Techies (Remote Detonation, Grand Melee)

    • Vengeful Spirit (Steal Strength, Curse of Atrophy)

    • Windranger (Grazing Shot)

Of particular note, if Monkey King and Razor are to be a prominent feature, it is likely Visage will join them as well, due to his connection to The Narrow Maze.

Does this seem likely at all? Valve has a history of teasing content months in advance. Who is Vanessa, really? Is there anything I missed? What do we think?

Who else is hyped for future card possibilities?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2018 10:48 AM PST

I mean common, they just released the basic stuff. There is literally so much fancy stuff you can do with heroes, the fountain, creeps, spells, improvements… perhaps you even have some cool ideas for interesting cards or future mechanics? Would love to hear them! Nice holydays everybody and have fun playing!

I feel like a Common/Uncommon gauntlet (peasant) would greatly increase the joy of the game

    Posted: 25 Dec 2018 11:20 AM PST

Constructed is pretty bad right now if you don't have heaps of top cards. I find that pretty sad since I LOVE building decks; it's so fun and enjoyable and strategic.

I do still play it with lesser cards, but it does start to grind me after a while and a bunch of people I know hate it even more for such reasons. The auto tournament system is pretty bad, not to mention only lets you use commons, which is a insanely small card pool as there is only 1 set.

This is where a gauntlet that lets you draft only using commons and uncommons could come into play. The cards are all fairly cheap, with Blink Dagger being the most expensive at less than a dollar. It also has a much bigger card of pool than simply commons, for a similar cost.

Best of all, it removes all the 8-10 game changer cards that some people hate. The Quorum or Damocles or ToT that basically just ends the game. Forcing you to have lots more back and forth rather than a massive swing in power towards the end of the game. Its fine if this makes the game longer, if people don't like that then theyre fine to go back to normal; this won't replace the normal gauntlet.

It also creates an alternative meta. Even if you have all the good cards, you might get annoyed at the game after a while, so you can go to this gauntlet to help take a breather, knowing you have an escape from the OP stuff.

You can get all the uncommons and commons for under 25 bucks, which makes it a far more attractive game for people who aren't whales. Some of whom may feel like theyre virtually limited to draft atm.

"Your Opponent's Towers Have Been Destroyed"

This has been driving me nuts since day 1. This message shows up even when you destroy the enemy Ancient. There should be a separate message for it.

    Discussion: buyback mechanic

    Posted: 25 Dec 2018 01:00 PM PST

Something that might be interesting to include would be a buyback mechanic akin to DotA. In exchange for some gold, a hero would respawn during hero deployment instead of having to wait a turn. The choice to buyback would be made after item shopping and would be visible to the opponent.

Objectives behind the mechanic would be to enhance the flavor of the game by adding another DotA mechanic and to add some reliability to econ strategies.

    What are your thoughts?

Valve totally botched the release of this game, but...

    Posted: 25 Dec 2018 10:01 PM PST

Yeah, Valve totally botched the release of this game.

There is a lack of features, many things just weren't thought out properly by the devs, balance of a few cards was slightly off (not a huge issue but made worse by the limited card pool). Game definitely has it's faults and still needs a lot of work if it wants to build a real community of players around it.

But at the heart of it all, the mechanics of the game are incredibly solid and the game play is fun for me. Valve has also shown they are willing to make the changes needed to make the game better. If they continue to listen to the community and improve the game, it will definitely be awesome within the year, and thankfully I have the luxury to wait. Games don't live or die by their release anymore.

I can enjoy a couple of games of Artifact a week without having to make it my life. I'm not so hard up for money that I need to try to sell out all the cards I have. I can pretty easily move on and play something else to fill my time (I'm STILL working on RDR2 and I just got God of War for xmas).

So yeah, I'll keep checking this sub when I'm bored at work, have a laugh at the doomposters and few memes that get posted. I'll enjoy a few games of Artifact every now and again. I'm sure in 6 months we'll have seen massive changes to the game overall, and Valve will have a ceremonial re-release of some kind to bring in a new swath of players to try the game out and the numbers will be solid and the game will finally be able to grow a true community around it.

I hope other people feel the same way I do about the game and it's future.

PRO TIP: Hover over cards in your opponent's deck to see how many rounds ago they were drawn.

    Posted: 25 Dec 2018 01:29 PM PST

I mostly use this as a way to see if the enemy has Annihilation/Condemn, etc. If the enemy tower has 6 mana (aka it's round 4) and a card in his hand was drawn 3-4 rounds ago, you should be afraid of Annihilation. Same goes for Time of Triumph at 8 mana. Make plays appropriately. :D

Building a drafting AI tool based on 5 win decks - I need your draft winning decks!

    Posted: 25 Dec 2018 01:37 PM PST

    Hey guys!

I'm currently working on some AI tool to recommend drafting choice / deck composition for the community - based on card synergies, mana curves, etc. Specifically I want to make one where the data is based on winning draft decks (5-0 or 5-1).

So - I need your winning decks! Deckcodes here, by PM, or on discord (@Shushan) would be great.

And thanks for people on this subreddit's Discord channel for giving me the first 60 deckcodes! We're getting there! I think 100 would put us in a good place.

Also - if you have any suggestions on what you would like to see - I'd love to hear it.

    How to learn drafting ?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2018 03:33 PM PST

Hey ! I'm new to the game, came from Hearthstone, but this is much much more complicated. I wanna focus on Drafting, however I don't know how I can understand card synergy or what works and what doesn't, especially with all the cards in game plus having to remember most of what I drew during the draft. I know there's some tier lists of cards out there as I have found some, but they can't work for the whole process of drafting, you've got to take cards that will work together, so you have to understand the game pretty well in order to do that, which I think won't be doing anytime soon.

Anybody has tips for this, or does it just comes as you play the game ? I really want to get into the game more, please help me !!!
