Artifact 1.0 was actually pretty fun

Over the past year I gradually spent around 40 bucks buying cheap cards off the market and I have a pretty good collection at the moment.

This gave me 80 hours of fun against the computer. I think it was pretty worth.

    Towards a patch-oriented meta?

Something that perhaps hasn't been talked about too much with the prospect of Artifact offering all its cards to all players, straight out of the gate, is that we could probably move away from the "expansion model" we've seen so far.

I bet a lot of people would kind of rebel to the idea, because it's such a big part of the card game culture, but Valve as the opportunity to move away from having a standard format and releasing its cards through expansions, sometimes banning some of them when they prove to be overpowered.

Instead, they could release and update cards through patches, like they do in Dota or Underlords. Big updates could add new cards, major reworks, additional mechanics, etc. Whereas small updates would mostly be slight number tweaks, or quality of life stuff.

I think the biggest argument against releasing cards through sets is that "the meta will be figured out and it'll get stale", but that already happens with an expansion model. It's only delayed by the fact that you need time to acquire the new cards required for the newest meta decks. Every few months, a new set upsets the meta (or doesn't) for a few weeks (or days) and then you have to wait again... And after that wait you either have to spend money or grind.

Would it be possible for Artifact to only have one set of cards that's constantly being updated with additions, buffs and nerves, and various improvements? Dota is certainly a different type of game with a lot more variables that make it possible for it to stay relevant throughout the years. But could a card-game live on that model?

    Let's be real

Valve are goddamn geniuses! A week before Half-Life Alyx launches, they announce Artifact 2.0 is coming. What a perfect marketing tool for promoting their new Half-Life game!

I expect the Artifact 2.0 news will be on April, 1st. So with that, well played Valve, well played.
