Anyone up for some petty fact checking? Posted: 18 Mar 2020 07:12 PM PDT TL;DR: Any coordinated review bombing was negligible compared to the the amount of legit negative reviews. Almost 1 year ago, RG and Skaff did an interview where they said that one of the major reasons Artifact failed is because of review bombing. They claimed people would buy the game just to leave a negative review, then refund it. Well, now we can find out if that's true. Valve recently added a feature to Steam where reviews indicate whether or not the reviewer refunded the game after leaving the negative review. Combined with the ability to narrow down reviews based on when they were written, and how long the game was played at review time, it should be fairly simple to see if Artifact was "review bombed" by people who bought the game for the sole purpose of leaving a negative review. From the launch on November 28th until January 4th, there were 549 reviews from players with 1 hour or less of play time, and had purchased the game on Steam (didn't get a free beta key). Of those 549, ~467 were negative. Removing the playtime restrictions during the same time period gives us 14,635 reviews in the same time span. Only 3 percent of negative reviews during the ~1 month after release had less than 1 hour of play time, and the majority of those didn't refund the game. So I think it's safe to say that having 1-2 percent of reviews being deliberate sabotage doesn't constitute a review bombing big enough to be the reason Artifact flopped. Changing the time played to a max of 2 hours, the longest amount of time allowed for refunds, gives 1160 negative reviews, or ~8% of all reviews. Skimming through the negative reviews during that time period, only 1-2% of those negative reviewers refunded the game, leaving us again at ~1-2% of total reviews meeting the criteria that could be considered a review bomb that RG says is one of the major reason Artifact failed. Of course, this analysis doesn't include people who planned to deliberately sabotage the game with negative reviews, and didn't refund the game. That's a level of dedicated pettiness that is outside the scope of this post. Thanks for joining in on my petty fact checking journey. [link] [comments] | ||
