Feels pretty surreal that things are actually starting to move.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 08:31 AM PDT

We've been waiting so long for just anything, and after almost exactly a year of silence so much happens so fast, the magazine headlines, the article, the steam announcements and now they even confirmed a public beta. I can't believe that we actually made it through, I mean I never gave up hope, Erik promised us that as long as his profile states it, he is working on artifact and I believed him, but still it's wild to finally see a more official confirmation. And looking back and doesn't even feel that long ago since the game dropped.

Personally I always enjoyed the core gameplay, and as someone with more money than time it was great for me to quickly get all cards without being at the mercy of packs, but I can understand that for most people it didn't feel like that. But regardless of any controversy I still think that artifact is mechanically the best card game I ever played.

I just hope that 2.0 will be an improvement in some way for all of us and that we will be able to play again without waiting 50 minutes for a match.

Let's discuss "The biggest gameplay change" of Artifact 2.0

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 10:50 AM PDT

I know people show their excitement in different ways (mostly shitposts and being angry about nothing) but I am surprised there was not a single post yet about the huge gameplay change Valve revealed in their recent post.

The biggest change is zooming out to allow players access to all three lanes at once. The majority of effects still work on individual lanes so they still maintain their identity, but it's less likely that a player will get shut out in the same way they used to.

As I interpret this, we will no longer play each board in succession from left to right every round but instead, we will be able to play cards on all three boards at the same time! It is likely that much of the board-design has been changed to accommodate for this, since the current "zoomed out" view would not make for a pleasant playing experience. They may also limit unit-count on every lane to keep things focused now that you have to think of all boards simultaneously, moreso than before.

This change alone affects the entire game and how it is played. Here are just a few differences:

It is possible that all boards share a single mana-pool now BUT I would assume that each lane will still have their own. This would keep much of the mana-management in-tact. They say many cards kept their identity, so it seems some cards will still affect the entire board while others only affect one lane etc.

However, completely removing the lane-progression of every round is an interesting change. Having a plan for the round, starting from deployment decisions to the priorities on every board was a big part of the game, especially because of the way Initiative worked and how important it often was to play the first card on the next board. Oftentimes, to keep Initiative and the first move on the next board, you had to essentially forfeit an entire mana-pool and keep passing. Now that the lanes are no longer as separated as they were before (as different phases of the round) and you will still be able to use the first lane as long as you have the mana (in that lane), lockouts, where you give up a lane early in the game, will happen less often.

Initiative (which probably still exists because it was such a good idea, other games ripped it off since Artifact was last updated) will now grant you the first action of the next round or a second action. No more board-to-board initiative.

Speaking of Initiative, two players passing will likely mean the end of the round now, rather than a board-switch, since those do not exist anymore. The lack of different Lane Phases will also affect all abilities and Improvements which usually trigger when the Lane switches. These may now trigger on all boards at the same time at the beginning of the round! So no more blink/laneswap for a second or third trigger-chance, either!

However, cross-lane actions will be even more dynamic than before! Previously, playing an Improvement from one of the latter lanes in the former, meant it would only really come into play the following round. Same for a hero being blinked/moved to a lane which is already locked. In Version 2.0, with all lanes remaining "open" for the entire round, depending on their mana-pools, you will be able to utilize all cross-lane effects and blinked heroes no matter which lane they were played from or into which lane! (Assuming these actions do not put some kind of cooldown/summoning-sickness on affected Heroes/Improvements)

So granting the player access to all three lanes during the entire round requires us to completely rethink how the game is played.

If you can think of other parts of the game this will affect, make sure to put those in the comments! Let's actually discuss the game for a change <3

Already got my Artifact Keys... misleading

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 10:13 PM PDT

Hey, could I get some help catching up on . . . everything?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 07:42 PM PDT

So when Artifact was announced I was super hyped, blah blah life story, fell out of the game about a year and 2 months ago.

I've been looking for something refreshing in the CCG world, and LOR wasn't giving me my fix, and with the recent announcement, I wanted to try Artifact again.

With that being said i'm out of the loop on everything, could I get some info on all the resources that I would need to catch up with (tournaments, decklists, general advice, etc)

    Thanks!

[Discussion] What gameplay changes would you like to see tested in the beta?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 11:12 AM PDT

Changes that are not necessarily kept but tried out before the relaunch. For me:

    • Arrows are always straight, but you can change the direction once for the cost of your action

    • Lock mechanic removed, or higly reduced. It's just not a good gameplay mechanic, locking out your enemy from play. After playing yugioh I think stun decks makes me not want to play.

    • Selling items (from your hand) during shopping phase for half the gold.

    • Being able to choose where to deploy your 2 creeps.

Guide: How to become a top 100 Artifact player

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 10:17 PM PDT

Hope we can get ALL cards EZ.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 02:45 PM PDT

Well, I have to see what Valve has built first, but I hate to grind. What does "no stacked deck" mean? I have my favorite decks. Take this one, for example:

    https://www.artifactfire.com/artifact/deck/black-magic-13689

It's not even about winning all the time, but simply about playing a specific deck that I enjoy. I have over 1000 hours of playing time because I have experimented a lot with decks. I didn't think it was great to have to buy the cards I needed. But it was 100 times better to buy them than to grind them. I would not have enjoyed that at all.

I have no problem if Valve giving away all the cards for free. I have no problem buying cards. But I don't want to have to buy card packs or have to grind. It's so annoying when you spent 100 Euro but the needed card was still missing. And to grind all the cards (with decks you don't want to play) is even more annoying.

Am I the only one who feels that way?

Artifact is missing a Duos mode of some sort

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 11:04 PM PDT

As the title says in all honesty its fun solo for a bit but a card game that can get friends involved is always going to be far more popular and unique (something almost every single card game lacks). Dota underlords does not count its not a card game.

My concern about the new update

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 12:00 AM PDT

Like all of you I am happy that the long haul is finally over and I am excited for more news, but I am concerned about one of the points after the first update and I would like to hear if I am alone with them.

If you play all three lanes at once the game will become more and not less complicated, since you will have even more options to consider. I agree with the developers that it becomes harder to lock players out, but it might also become even more intimidating for new players.
