Autochess Makes Artifact Obsolete Posted: 03 Jul 2019 02:01 PM PDT When Autochess started catching on I saw people saying things like "should Valve continue to work on Artifact now that Autochess is blowing up?" and to be honest I dismissed those posts. I figured the games are wildly different and people were basically just trolling - pointing out that Autochess was a very successful game based on DOTA whereas Artifact was bombing. But now that I've played some of this type of game (I've only played Teamfight Tactics, the League of Legends variant, but they all seems similar enough) I don't see much place for Artifact in the market. On the surface the games are very different but they have a lot of the same design spirit and I would guess audience overlap. In both games you don't control the battles, you can only influence them before they start. But in the Autochess the battles are enjoyable and in Artifact they are rote. People often say that in Artifact if you lose on round 10 you could have won had you done something different in round 1 - but for Artifact that feels like a rationalization whereas in TFT it feels more true and less like an excuse, in part because it's easier to understand the flow of the game over time, and easier to pinpoint where your high-level strategy may have been wrong. Both games are about managing RNG, but the RNG in TFT is less frustrating, more subject to the law of averages, and more pliable to high level strategy. Artifact has some Dominion (the card game) elements - the item deck, gold and modifications all feel like managing current power vs future potential. But in TFT this is a better-realized theme and more central to the game. (Saving for econ vs rolling) Artifact and Autochess are very different games but it feels like the scratch the same part of the brain and are about similar high-level concepts - but the Autochess style games are just more fun and better executed. More understandable, more fun to play and watch, more visceral and "juicy", more focused around a few interesting concepts. Unless there's a huge audience of people who just really love card games exclusively it's hard to see what Artifact could do to be better than Autochess or target a different audience. Again, I thought the people saying this before were just rubbing the success of Autochess into Artifact's face. But after playing an Autochess style game I think there's real merit to the idea that Autochess is similar to Artifact but also just plain better. If I were Valve I would be thinking "let's pack it in boys." Why spend resources on Artifact when you could put those resources into Underlords, which is similar but both more popular and better?
