A huge problem with Artifact was that it's pay-to-play events and no free pack grinding APPEARED greedy when in fact they served a purpose

The hill that Valve chose to die on (and did) with Artifact was that cards have VALUE in a FREE MARKET. They wanted Artifact to be a true TRADING Card Game. This is why there were no free packs (the capped "free" packs they added to progression were simply them extending the amount of packs your entry fee got you). If you got packs for free then the value for all cards crashes to zero and the trading aspect is gone. Ditto for allowing a play mode that awards you cards without you having to pay.

If you play Magic the Gathering this is exactly how it works playing in IRL events and no one bats an eye.

The idea of being ablt to play with these real value cards, to be able to "Go infinite" by winning events consistently, and trading cards for Steam money that could be spent on anything inside of Steam is really cool, but it turns out that what you have to sacrifice for it just isn't worth it.

Valve 2 most popular games are DOTA and CS and they both are True FreetoPlay, where it costs zero dollars to have access to the complete scope of gameplay, and all money can only be spent on cosmetics. Coincidentally both of these games use exactly the same philosophy of "nothing for free preserves value", cosmetics can all be traded and everyone loves it.

The big difference obviously is that those are cosmetics that don't affect gameplay, vs the literal objects that you need to play the game on any level with.

My hope is that Artifact follows this path of True Free to Play, I think it's the only way it can succeed.
