Posted: 02 Nov 2019 08:06 PM PDT Decided to play some Artifact the last couple days. I forgot how fun it is. Took me like 7 games to remember how to play well enough to get some wins. [link] [comments] | ||

[Serious] Discussion about Artifact Monetization Posted: 02 Nov 2019 03:42 AM PDT First of all, I beg You, avoid posting troll, spam or 'doom' comments or just saying "Those are all bad solutions", without giving one of your own . I would like to keep the thread serious to some extent. You don't need to read text in spoilers those are my opinions and elaborations. Issue: If you ask me, Artifact failed because it had bad monetization practice. Gameplay is great, graphics are great; yeah, you have to pay 18$ to play it, it isn't really for casuals and it doesn't have ranked yet BUT the biggest issue here is monetization, again, if you ask me. Elaboration on why that is a biggest problem: Maybe this didn't bother the people who have money to spend on games but it bothered me and my friend. Paying 18$ for the game was already a lot which I don't mind exactly but this is how it went for us. We got our packs, got some cool cards nothing special and we went into 'Standard Play' played mostly against people who bought cards and had polished decks, so we would naturally lose. We played against each other and we realized that 1 of us just had better cards from start and he would always win. So, we went to get new cards. (Keep in mind there weren't those level rewards back then)We learned about drafting, practiced it on 'Standard Phantom Draft' and we decided it is time to jump into Phantom Draft (Prize Play). Obviously we weren't going to try Constructed (Prize Play) with our shitty decks. We won some, got some packs and eventually and inevitably we lost all our tickets. We made new decks, jumped in 'Standard Play', soon realized that those decks are not going to win against copy's of some pro player's deck and we went back to playing against each other. Again, one of use had little bit better cards and kept winning. Finally, with no chances to win against strong decks and no chance to get new cards without investing money, we left Artifact. Quick note: Even now with those level rewards, which are great, you will eventually lose all your tickets and you won't be able to get new cards without investing money. Note#1: If you're thinking: "Valve won't do that or that they want money", please keep in mind that they went too greedy in the first place and we all know where that took them. Note#2: Also we will ignore issues like: Balance, Thundergod's Wrath animation, not having rank system, not being able to trade cards, etc. Because those issues will be sorted out eventually for sure. Quick elaboration on 'not being able to trade cards: I don't think they will ever enable this cuz this would lose them some money and they would again have problems with gambling websites. Even tho, they might be forced into it in future cuz of those changes in laws in France. Solution#1: Make Artifact free to play. Artifact goes free to play on Steam but you still have to pay for packs/tickets/cards. This solution in my opinion is not viable at all and I don't think that valve will implement it. This would mean that you wouldn't get your starting packs and tickets and you would start with most basic cards and heroes (Keefe the Bold, J'Muy the Wise, Debbi the Cunning and Rix). There is 0% that they will do this so let's not waste too much time here. Solution#2: Make Artifact free. Artifact goes free on Steam and you get all cards for free. Again, highly unlikely since there is no monetization here so we will keep going. Solution#3: When you buy the game, you get all cards to play with. In this case, price of Artifact would jump and they would get steady money income, in some point when most people buy the game there would be no income at all. In my opinion, this is again highly unlikely. Quick note before we go into 4th solution, if you have other solution or you think you could improve this one, please leave your opinion in comments so we can discuss it. Also guys, be realistic don't just comment what you want cuz then everybody would just say Solution#2 and we wouldn't figure anything out. Most of you have all cards and would love to choose a solution where you can profit more then new players so keep that in mind and don't push new players away. Solution#4: Make a way to get packs/cards for free. I know that some of you are thinking that valve will never give you something for free or that this would break the economy but for now just bear with me as we dive into this short (not really cuz I have to explain everything so I don't have to type it later in comments) not so complex solution. Leave the game at 18$ base cost so you can get your starting stuff that makes you happy and valve can get some money from the start. Now, I truly think that the only way to fix this is to give players a free ticket now and then. This ticket would have to be 'Draft ticket' (You can use it only for Phantom draft and Keeper draft). Why not Constructed you ask? First reason for this is that there could be a meta where there is 1 broken deck that could win against any other deck. Which would mean that constructed would almost a guarantee to win, with exeption that you play against same deck and lose. Guaranteed profit won't go trough with Valve if you ask me. Second reason is that people who don't have all cards and need new cards, will face people who bought all cards already and have copied someone's powerful deck and new player would lose. Then player with all cards will get new cards just to make more profit. Which is not fair in my opinion. I still think it fair idea to be able to use ticket for constructed cuz ranking will balance things out but still if you are new player with shit cards, you win and get higher rank, you face someone with better deck and you lose and get stuck. Should this ticket be available for use in Keeper Draft? I'm not 100% about this but I don't see problems with it since you have to invest 3 packs for it in the beginning. Why Phantom Draft? This is best option for this ticket cuz Phantom Draft will not guarantee you profit. Actually if you ask me, most of the times you will lose those tickets cuz you don't know how to play it, or you will win some and get into higher ranks and start loosing again. This is where skill takes over. Keep in mind, this is not a guarantee profit from ticket that you got for free, it is just a chance. How do you obtain 'Draft tickets'? Best way by far is going with daily quests. They give incentive to play and try different stuff. You play 3 quests a day (Number of quests is discussable) and you get rewarded for finishing them. But the reward is what's bugging me the most. Should you get 1 ticket for finishing all 3 quests? Should you get a ticket for every quest you finish? Should you get ticket shard from each quests (5 shards = 1 ticket)? Should you get points from each quest, amount would vary from difficulty of the quest and then you trade points for ticket? This is where the problems come. We would need to figure out what amount of tickets would be good to get per day/week/month. In what ratio your tickets fail? We need to balance it so you don't get too much but you don't discourage new players. My quick opinions on these options: - 3 quests = 1 ticket: Balanced to some extent. - 3 quests = 3 tickets: Too much. - 3 quests = 3 shards; 5 shards = 1 ticket: Good system but maybe too slow. - 3 quests = xPoints; yPoints = ticket: Ugly system but could be balanced very easily with just playing with number of points you get. Note: This is not brain-dead way of getting something for free. Ticket gives player a chance to get new cards without giving money, small chance but still a hope to latch onto! This would still make money for Valve, they got greedy first time and you can see where that took them. Getting all the cards with this process would take you like months if you are not the very skilled. It would be hard but interesting and hopefully enjoyable process where you would have get good and learn the game. People who have money that they can spend on a game would still buy tickets/packs so they don't have to spend too much time grinding. Do you think even this is too harsh for new player? I mean maybe it isn't a best solution but it is best I can think of. Do you agree with me or you do you have a better solution. Let me know. tl;dr - Artifact has a problem with monetasion - I'm trying to fix it by adding quests to the game, quests give you tickets (or a way to get them) that can be used on Phantom Draft and Keeper Draft - Amount of tickets/shards/points is here for discussion - If you have a better solution, leave it in the comments [link] [comments] |
