Yet another "Why this game disappointed" writeup

    Posted: 18 Apr 2019 04:33 PM PDT

I really wanted to like this game, and I did, for the first few months. But the more you play, the more the problems become apparent. As a longtime lurker I wanted to offer my two cents as I haven't seen my own personal issues with the game pop up here much.

The game is built around stopping your opponent from playing cards Pretty simple: people generally like to play cards in card games. Too much of Artifact is about stopping your opponent from playing cards: killing heroes, stun, silence, lock. I don't really think any of the latter three methods is very satisfying to either player. To lose games because you couldn't play the card in your hand that you wanted to - as opposed to making the wrong card playing decision - is extremely unsatisfying.

The hero pool is extremely uninspiring A few heroes are genuinely well designed: Luna, Sniper, Phantom Assassin, and maybe a few others. As for the rest, the design philosophy for most of them seems to be "let's just lazily throw Dota abilities onto their heroes regardless if the end product makes any fucking sense whatsoever". Mana drain is laughable. Hand of God only seems to be Chen's card because it was his Dota spell. Winter's curse has no synergy with Arctic Burn whatsoever. Seeing sacrifice on Lich now is amusing given that it doesn't fit with his Dota kit anymore (much less his Artifact card). On the topic of discarded Dota abilities, Essence Aura is objectively stupid in this game. And could they really not get any more creative with one of Dota's most interesting spells, Fissure?

The basic heroes are also tiring as hell because you'll run into them annoyingly often if you have the patience to play draft. J'Muy clearly has his trash abilities because the developers realized the rest of blue was too good for draft to have a powerful basic hero. Debbi is actually better than many black heroes for some reason because of how useful No Accident is. AND I'M SO FUCKING SICK OF PLAYING WITH OR AGAINST FARVHAN AND KEEFE. THESE HEROES ARE BORING AS SHIT BUT THEY'RE IN EVERY FUCKING DRAFT GAME. ENOUGH ALREADY.

The item buying system is awful As a general rule, player suggestions for how to change basic game mechanics are awful. But I have yet to find a suggestion for changing the item shop that isn't better than the one in Artifact. I actually think they went with the worst possible system here, which is unfortunate because item buying could potentially lead to a number of interesting decision making situations.

The card rarity system makes draft mode very repetitive

It just comes down to endless battles with the same goddamned strong common cards: bronze legionnaires, arm the rebellion, oglodi vandals, and dimensional portals; with ⅗ heroes being Farvhans and Debbis. Yawn.

The ramp mechanic makes constructed boring My grandfather could probably play red/green ramp to its maximum potential and he's 94 with dementia. I don't necessarily think it's unbalanced in terms of winning games but it's boring and there is little in the way of counterplay if the correct cards are drawn AND EVERYONE FUCKING RUNS THIS.

There's nothing better in card games than a close game of Artifact between decks that are primarily black and/or blue. The difference in satisfaction, personally, between those games and red/green snoozers is stark.

$20 upfront for a card game with microtransactions makes no sense whatsoever given the market for this type of game

    Pretty self explanatory

Dear Valve, I'd still play the crap out of Artifact on mobile.

Please don't give up on developing Android and iOS versions of the game along with 2.0.

Good game, guy that I just played against.

You were playing a Black/Green deck against my Mono Blue deck, we went to mana 16 and I drew every card in my deck. In the end I won due to Ogre giving me an extra Echo Slam, killing the creeps and letting my Zeus deal the last 2 damage on the tower. Also no one cared about the last lane for some reason lol. Good game, dude!

    Artifact's Future

    Posted: 18 Apr 2019 12:13 PM PDT

    Hello there,

I am just wondering, is it confirmed anywhere about Artifact's future? I just do not know if I should keep my collection or not, I kinda could use the money for other uses, but I might keep my collection if it is indeed confirmed somewhere that Artifact does has a future overhaul. Please anyone?

By the way, sorry for the bad English.

Has anybody ever had this happen to them before?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2019 07:19 AM PDT

First turn, first lane. This guy somehow had 3 stars align and thunderhide alpha in his hand. Plays all 3 stars align to get to 9 mana and then drops the Alpha and smacks my tower for 25 damage. Needless to say, I got wrecked. Just thought it was the craziest opening i've ever seen. Anybody else seen insane stuff like this?
