To all the content creators and aspiring pro players worried about Artifact's launch

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 05:27 AM PDT

I think a lot of people who wanted to pour their lives into this game were pretty disappointed over the last two weeks with player and viewer numbers dropping. Actually, I know this, because many of them are friends that I talk to regularly.

Wanted to make a quick post sincerely advising anybody who put a lot of time in to not be discouraged. As I mentioned in my post yesterday, this environment is ideal for smaller talent to grow organically. In fact, it's almost necessary, with rare exception. Growth happens with game launches only for large and maybe the occasional medium sized content creator. For small ones, it happens with updates and expansions.

There was a meme post on the subreddit a few days ago about the odds of winning the 1mil tournament going up as the playerbase goes down...honestly this was a pretty good meme, I laughed out loud. But honestly it's pretty close to how things work. It's almost impossible to prove yourself as a player in a super saturated market early on; nobody can prove anybody is good so early on so tournaments are forced to invite better-known players from other games and it snowballs.

Lastly, I want to preempt some criticism: I think this advise will probably seem hypocritical at first because I myself have been kind of down about the scale of the game's launch. But, to be perfectly candid, different sizes of content creators have to use very different strategies. A streamer of Savjz's size for example is kind of forced to play other games to avoid tanking his viewership; although I hope he'll be back as viewership in Artifact rises, which it will, although slower than some would like. Regardless, the EXACT opposite is true for small talent trying to grow. This advise is aimed at people looking to make a name for themselves. And this is the perfect time and environment to do that. For me...I'm a bit stuck in the middle of those extremes. But I'm still sticking with Artifact.

Don't worry about switching games or Artifact's future. And don't worry about the toxicity; most people are just upset right now and that will turn around.

    TL;DR April Fools

Artifact Is the Best Card Game Ever Made

As Artifact hibernates, Valve should temporarily give everyone all the cards.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 05:36 PM PDT

Even making the game free could be argued (and then have a re-launch free for previous owners and 19.99 for everyone else), but at least giving the cards to those of us that PAYED for the game, i think would be fair.
Just until the next update, which could take months for all we know, at least we could make some use of the money spent.
I don't see why not, even people that payed a lot to get their cards should be able to agree, as having people to play against is better than feeling mighty and superior with your superior deck that can't battle anyone because nobody plays the game.

    Opinion: Artifact's Biggest Design Flaw

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 01:50 PM PDT

I actually liked Artifact a lot. I liked the concept, I liked the elegance of the design, I liked the complexity and the combos. I wasn't that bothered by the cost - I played draft when things were expensive and got into constructed after the cost came down. Now, I realized I haven't opened the game in over two months. Why?

I think the biggest design flaw in Artifact is its reliance on a small number of cards as win conditions, which makes it seem repetitive and takes a lot of the fun out of exploring. Basically, every constructed deck needs either Time of Triumph, Emissary of the Quarum, Bolt of Damacles, Helm of the Dominator, or Assault Ladders/The Oath to close out games. For draft things are a little less rigid, but I still find myself relying on the same A-list cards for most of my decks. For a game genre that shines in replay value, I quickly ran out of new things I wanted to try. While many cool combos existed in the game, in the end they boiled down to a much smaller number of win conditions, and many of the cards and combos were too weak in the first place. I think this is a balance issue and a design issue, where every color should feel like it has multiple paths to victory, but they all have a strategic bottleneck when closing out games.

    Possible to get a refund?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 10:12 PM PDT

With their latest statement, is there just cause to get a refund from steam even if you've played a bunch? Especially since if the game IS changing drastically its likely that none of our current cards will be relevant.

Its not the end of the world if I cant get a refund, just wondering if its an option.

People stop playing. Not because they don't like the game, but because there won't be any expansions for the foreseeable future. Is so sad. :(

Please Valve: Create a f2p version without access to the card market, without boosters, without rewards and without prize play. But let the people play solo, phantom draft and call to arms for free. That would breathe life into Artifact.

There should be small updates during the revision and the community should be able to vote on card designs.

    Valve should make people happy.

There are still people who love Artifact.

I'm surprised "Arrow thread threads" keep popping up

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 02:37 PM PDT

Arrow threads are vital part of this subreddits foundation, right up there with Keefe Facts.

Arrow threads provide a vital source of pointless complaining, without which /r/artifact would never be able become the wasteland it was destined to be. Are we going to let Anthem have the saddest official subreddit on th site? I don't think so.

We can all agree that Garfield is an undisputed genius with Keefe-like visionary game sense. Its also clear that he is a moron who doesn't even know what computers are. How else can Mr Monday hope to salvage this amazing, yet definitely extinct game, if we don't mindlessly shout our opinions into the void that is /r/artifact?

I'm surprised that "Arrow threads" are keep popping up

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 01:06 PM PDT

Game was released more than 4 month ago and still somebody tries to remove randomness of arrows. Why? I suppose already everyone should know why they are random. And community should blame each such person for foolishness.

<TLDR> They are random to make game more stable. This is required to make game suitable for eSport. If you remove them then game will become random shitshow. This is possible outcome if Valve wants to please the crowd.

Things I'm writing below is common sense for CCG developers. For example:

    https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/making-magic/kind-acts-randomness-2009-12-14

So Valve wanted to make cybersport CCG. But games like MTG is just a lottery (yes, MTG is one the most random CCGs). Win decided mostly by luck. Deck is the main RNG in CCG. Problem here that cards you draw from the deck can have very different value in different situations. You need to draw right combination of cards. And if you draw your combo then you win. For example to play any card you need to draw one or more lands. This is a combo between two (or more) cards. MTG is very heavily relies on combos. And developers of the MTG creates new ones by creating new sets. This is the main fun from MTG by discovering them. Dispite the fact that this is fun game this is VERY random game which is not suitable for eSport.

There are several ways to fight random in games:

    1. Make random outcome insignificant. For example units in RTS can have random damage but player do not care about it. So you can make that all cards have about same value and it does not really matter what you draw. Yeah, this is very boring and this option do not work in CCG.
    2. Give players some fixed values. So if you throw D6 and one player recieve 1 and another player recieved 6 then second player have 6th times more value from RNG. But if you add 10 to this value then one player have 11 and another one have 16. So damage difference would not be so high (45% instead of 500%). For example player in HS has one guaranteed card each round (ability) and have guaranteed resources (mana).
    3. Add more RNG which can give player same value. Yeah, you beat RNG by adding more RNG. Players who are familiar with tabletop games know that the more dices you through the higher chance to recieve value around the middle. For example if you throw 2D6 then chance to recieve 7 is 1/6 while chance to recieve 2 is 1/36 (so chance to recieve middle value is 6th times higher). It's very important that different sources of RNG was comparable. Because if one source can produce two values: "0 and 100" and another source of RNG is D6 than if you rolled 100 and you opponent rolled 0 then result of D6 does not matter. When player draws his combo from the deck then "he rolled 100". If opponent's draw was not lucky then everything else does not matter at all.

Of course it's very important that players can influence on result of the game. They should be able to play around random. Their plays should be significant.

So Richard Garfield should make more stable game which should be more deep than HS. And he made it:

    - Developers reduced influence of combos. There are a lot less synergies between cards in Artifact. Yeah, less fun but it's important sacrifice.

    - They implemented more RNGs. Arrows, shop, deployment and random outcomes of different cards (on top of usual deck). All of these RNGs are important. You was lucky with draws but recieves bad arrows. You have got horn on turn 2 but enemy have card to counter it. Winning by shear luck is possible but chance is pretty low. Moreover importance of different RNGs increase with mana (you have more powerful creeps which can curve or you have more money to buy something from secret shop) so they can counter lucky draw of powerful card. Even stupid ogre can multicast more powerful spell.

    - Players have guaranteed fixed values. Heroes are guaranteed units. Moreover player have 2 guaranteed creeps each turn. Mana and money source is not random too.

    - Player moves are VERY important and can change result of RNG. For example if enemy creep blocks 20 damage from 3 your units then you can slay it. Or save slay for thunderhide pack. And this decision can cost you a game. Most of the random events happen before player move. This does not make player to feel that RNG is bad and he lose control.

    - Due to big number of different random events game cannot be solved (well, at least by human). Also enemy moves right after you so you need to think about his possible moves constantly.

So game design is almost brilliant for eSport game. It's so good that game have not mulligan. Yeah, game does not need it because draw random is not so important. They beat it! Yeah, they messed up with some cards like cheating death (random outcome happens AFTER play move) but this is just some bad cards which could be fixed or banned. But game design has one flaw. It's too intense for casual player. Each your move can cost you a game and you do not want to think about each move after work. Still this is not HUGE disadvantage because a lot of people play chess for fun where each move is important. And they are not smart but they like gameplay. I think main problem was feelings after losing (prize mode...) and not core game itself.

So when you propose to remove arrow RNG to make game less random you are wrong. You make game MORE random. Yes, Valve can remove all this stuff but then they will compete with HS and MTG. And I'm sure Artifact will not win this battle. Same as Heroes of the Storm did not win against Dota and LoL. And nothing won against WoW. So better to stick "eSport" idea and hope that developers are capable to make game comfortable enough for casual to try and like it. Somehow they made it with Dota 2 which much harder than LoL and have very toxic community. Maybe somehow they will make this with Artifact.

A look at Valve's new feedback methodology for Artifact

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 08:17 AM PDT

A couple things stood out to me in Valve's recent "Longer Haul" announcement. I think they gave a clue as to their new system for gathering feedback for the redesign (emphasis mine):

Since launch, we've been looking carefully at how players interact with the game as well as gathering feedback.

Here we can initially think that this means they've been gathering feedback indirectly (Steam reviews, reddit, etc). But, I believe the quote below shows they're planning on getting direct feedback for this next stage (emphasis mine):

Moving forward, we'll be heads-down focusing on addressing these larger issues instead of shipping updates. While we expect this process of experimentation and development to take a significant amount of time, we're excited to tackle this challenge and will get back to you as soon as we are ready.

We know of at least two streamers that have been in direct contact with the Artifact team (Life/Wifecoach). With Valve's last line in the quote above, they seem to indicate that they have no plans for any sort of open beta, public closed beta, etc.

So, what does this mean? I believe they will be performing another closed beta, similar to how the first one was done (only pros, streamers, influencers, and so on). However, I believe this time around they will be using a "middle out" strategy with closed beta participants.

Middle out is a complex design process used widely in the industry, and not easily explained. However, a good metaphor can be found in this clip, so it's easier to understand:

    https://youtu.be/mMeqEDEfniA

With this method, I think we'll hear a lot of positive things from those lucky enough to participate in this new and excited stage of Artifact's development.

How learning from Jagex (OSRS) will save Artifact.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 02:14 PM PDT

After reading the post that Valve recently released, I think I might have a suggestion that could really work and would probably benefit Valve more than whatever plans they have for the game right now.

    In the post, Valve mentions:

"Artifact now represents an opportunity for us to improve our craft and use that knowledge to build better games".

I think this is great! Artifact has most certainly been a learning experience for them and I hope their future games kickass because of it.

Now with that being said I do think that Valve is, for the coming years at least, greatly reducing their budget on Artifact, and that any improved version of Artifact will "take a significant amount of time". I also think that the perfect solution for this would be to follow in the footsteps of Old School RuneScape and adopt their community voting system.

In OSRS, every now and then Jagex will release a list of all the changes that they are planning on adding to the next patch. Everyone* who has an active subscription can vote once on all of the changes. If a change doesn't get more than 75% of the votes, then it won't show up in the next patch. That idea is then either re-worked and presented again the next time, or it is scrapped.

Something that struck me when reading the OSRS "Polls" wikipage, was:

"These [polls] and other aspects related to polling itself have also been subject of polls, but have historically failed to pass".

The fact that the people that are using the voting system had the opportunity to change it but chose not to is clear evidence that players are happy with how they are able to influence the game.

I believe that this is the perfect chance for Valve to test something new (or something similar) and see how it works out. If they're feeling a little ballsy, they could even take suggestions from the playerbase and allow the rest of the playerbase to vote on all of the suggestions. Good suggestions given by dedicated players would reduce workload from the development team and greatly improve the communication between Artifact and its players.

*You do also have to have a total level of 300 and a minimum play-time of 25 hours on your account to be able to vote.
