It's not either Garfield or Valve's fault alone, it's both of theirs together Posted: 06 Jun 2019 10:42 PM PDT This sub has been split before because some love Valve but not Garfield, some don't like Valve but love Garfield. I hope those that love both are gone by now. But we should set the record straight: neither of them deserve our love. Garfield's mistake #1: Refusing to allow competitive non-monetized play options, ability to grind, etc. The ultimate "paradoxical joker of jokers" so to speak. Ie: "I'm against kids addicting themselves to games, so lets teach them gambling with real money instead". The ultimate "sleight of mind" magician and trickster. The logical mathematician not applying logic. Garfield's mistake #2) Allowing Cheating Death, Gust and other ridiculous cards to be approved. As the guy pulling the strings, he alone must take responsibility for this. Whilst obvious to every single gamer here how and why cards like these were bad, it wasn't obvious to the "one hit wonderman" from 20 years ago why such dice rolls just don't cut it anymore. Whether he failed to realize Hearthstone's success was due to first mover advantage, not RNG, or whether he genuinely has no idea about competitive gaming, I have no idea. It seems even Magic itself evolved into a less RNG focus without his help. Valve's mistake #1: If all the meme posts here from ex-Valve employees are true, ie: Valve being a "flat" structure on the surface but in reality having a "management structure that can get you fired if you don't play along that isn't transparent at all", then it's no wonder the company has turned so shit. This alone explains everything that went wrong and how someone like Garfield was able to wield such influence. It explains how "invisibly lower ranked but idealistically equal" Valve employees would have been ignored/fired for disagreeing with him, and how the actual customers & the gaming community itself was also ignored right through from beta testers to the entire playerbase after the game's release. Reading these ex-Valve employee posts is just shocking. But hey, it's Gaben's company to destroy as he wishes, it's just sad we all thought that the company was somehow different to that. Now we all know better what a shitfest it is. I mean how do you tell your actual profit generating customers to fuck off just so you can maintain an upper management circle jerk? It's astounding. We can't really blame Garfield for this, his tri-lane idea was fantastic, his idea behind initiative was fantastic, he definitely had some gems in there. But you can't let someone who has one or two genius insights control the entire fucking train. Things are compartmentalized into different areas for a reason. It's the same reason you don't give someone like George Lucas the freedom to create his own movie without any external boundaries in place. Genius in one area doesn't translate to other areas. A good manager should have the social acumen to know when to listen to the genius, and when to nod politely and agree to maintain the morale and focus of the genius, but internally ignore them whilst finding someone more qualified in that particular area for that particular decision. All good projects and governments are not led by the genius, they're led by good managers who can appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of the genius that the genius themselves can't see. This is done for a very good reason. Clearly Gaben can't do that. Valve's mistake #2) To this day I'm baffled how this game was released without a replay mode, ranking mode and without cash tournaments. Until now there has not been a single cash tournament run by Valve. The community has picked up the slack for Valve BIG TIME whilst profiting nothing from it. I don't care if it's incredible arrogance, indifference or lack of awareness, Valve not hosting a single tournament for this game until now is one of the major reasons it collapsed. I, like many other players, were looking for a SINGLE straw to grasp to keep training in this game. Even measly $10k monthly tournaments, absolute peanuts for Valve, would have been enough to keep the playerbase in this game much, much higher than it is, even with all the other mistakes being there. It would have also kept Valve's reputation more or less intact and the damage control would have been highly successful. Instead, Valve threw a tantrum via complete game abandonment. Ultimately the fact Valve hasn't launched a single tournament for the game, deciding that it's "always been best for the community to do so" whilst simultaneously alluding to million dollar tournaments in the odd interview when it suited them before but doesn't now, just reeks of a little spoilt child throwing the baby out with the bathwater because things didn't go perfectly its way. Gaben being the leader of the company must in fact be that spoilt little child, who else could it be? It's shocking watching an older man indirectly behave like that. He should know better especially from his gaming business experience. All in all I don't think we can blame Garfield or Valve and defend the other one. They both deserve to be blamed for this fuck up together. The path forward for them is to stop listening to their closed elite circle, both from within their company (internal dictators that are "more equal than others") and outside it (Twitch streamers and "golden ticket holders").
