Artifact - Artifact 2.0 is not Artifact 1.0

Artifact 2.0 is not Artifact 1.0

We get it, you've spent hundreds, if not thousands, of hours playing the original Artifact. You've become a tight knit group of friends that have played together for months. However, the game was an undeniable failure for a number of reasons, and Valve felt it was a better idea to do a complete reboot instead of trying to make incremental fixes to the base game. Like it or not, Artifact 2.0 is going to be quite a bit different than 1.0.

No matter how many youtube videos, essays, or podcasts you make about how the game is "dumbed down", "ruined", "made for casuals", etc., Valve isn't going to go back to the old failed formula just to appease the 1000 of you still playing. I know it's the internet and pre-emptively hating, complaining, and worrying is the cool thing to do, but maybe let those of us who are excited about Artifact 2.0 have some time to theorycraft and talk about what the devs have revealed, instead of acting like the "Doomposters" and "Haters" you've all complained about since the original release.

Ohhh... I'm dense. Now I get it. Seeing all three lanes actually implicates a big change.

The game play will be much accelerated if, instead of waiting 3 lanes to play out, many times having lanes you're totally locked out of, imagine the initiative passing back and forth and being able to play in any lane on your turn and the board "crash" (combat) happening all at once across all three lanes.

If that was how it would work, then no lane would be inherently disadvantaged and also the game will feel more fluid, more "do things until you're done doing things" not "OK, wait this lane out doing nothing."

Being more cross-lane also would feel more "chess like" in that there's play-counterplay instead of "committing" to lanes and then kind of being at the mercy of how those lanes play out which front loads the decision making and then feels like you get stuck.

Overall, I can see how this will feel better than Artifact 1.0, the main question will be how dota-esque and differentiating the 3 lane system will continue to be with these changes. I think it could still be very cool, but I'm now really wanting to see how this feels.

Fifteen slots still allows for wide boards, guys.

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 07:31 AM PDT

I keep seeing people say that there is no longer any incentive to go Wide on board, as we went from unlimited slots down to 5 per lane, 15 total. That certain strategies are bad because they can't keep going on and on into infinity

    This is false.

Hearthstone still has fast and wide boards (Pirate Warrior, Murlocs, Facehunter) and it has 7 slots on the board. LoR has the Elise Package that causes huge problems in the early game because of how many bodies you can put on the board, and there are 6 slots for it. Heck, Prey on the Weak is pretty much a one for one card on Unleash the Hounds, and Hounds was one of the most broken cards in Hearthstone during Facehunter times.

Artifact is going to have 15. 15 slots for dudes. That's a lot of creeps, and self replicating Creeps like Pillager are still going to be an issue if you can properly position them, as you can position heroes in one lane and then RMP in another, having two lanes that demand answers.

The thing is, Blue wouldn't have needed 30 board wipes in the base set if Blue didn't also flood the board with 50 units, and that number of board wipes did a lot more harm to going wide than unlimited board width ever did to help it.

Will Artifact 1.0 still be available on Steam, or is it being fully replaced with 2.0?

Valve we appreciate you checking our feedback, but no good feedback would come unless we’re actually playing the game. Release the betas!

Send keys to people, ask after the game for reviews. Give in game questionnaires.

    Interesting situation: Bristleback vs Bristleback

    Interesting situation: Bristleback vs Bristleback

Suppose in a lane you put a BB right opposite to enemy team BB (both BBs at 5 health), and hit enemy BB with an ability. Enemy BB will quill spray, due to which ally BB will quill spray and Voila, we have a quill spray chain reaction until enemy BB dies and ally BB survives at 1 HP. Interesting, right?!

    For everyone's reference
