Artifact 2.0: Hero Draft Play Through With Explanations #1

IMO, One card draw per turn is really lacking for a game that has 3 lanes.

I already sent feedback to Valve about this matter. Here is what I wrote.

"Hello, I like your experiment about the amount of card draw per turn in constructed.

In my opinion, one card draw per turn is surely lacking for a game like Artifact that has 3 lanes. It's like you want us to play just one or two cards per turn, which mean out of 3 lanes we can only choose to do something in one or two of those lanes (usually JUST ONE).

Sure, we can use item and hero's active skill, but the impact of doing those things are usually much less than playing cards from our hand. (Which make sense since those actions only cost one mana, if they impact the game too much they will be too OP.)

Because of this, I'm very glad to see you brought 1.5 card draw per turn to be default in constructed mode. And after trying, I really love the change. Though I have to lower the mana curve of my deck to go well with it.

I also think it is better to increase card draw per turn in draft mode. But not sure we will have enough mana to play the addition cards we get. Since unlike constructed, we can't lower mana curve to accommodate it. You might need to change mana system a bit, so that we can play 2-3 cards every turn."

A couple of quick comments after playing the beta

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 12:42 AM PDT

I was just invited to the beta and after playing a couple of games (level 5 now), I have a couple of comments about the game play. I would love to see your opinions in the following topic.

    1. Mana usage: First of all, I don't really like the new mana system. There is too little what we can do, especially in the first couple of rounds. To make it worse, items and heroes skills even cost mana to cast. There should be some changes so that you can do more each turn. Remember in the 1.0 version, you have 1 mana pool for each lane. That's 3 times what we have now in the 2.0 version.

    2. Laning: I understand the idea behind the "wining 2 out of 3 lanes" rule comes from Dota. As a dota player myself, it's very interesting to have that incorporated into the gameplay. I think the old version did a good job with it as well. For example, under the 1.0 version, you can actually take advantage of the losing lane to help you win other 2 lanes. Or you can trick your opponent by losing 2 other lanes and doubling down in the lane that he chose to abandon. It's just beautiful and I really love it when I pull off a cheeky win like that. But now, it really doesn't matter because of the mana issue and the fact that each lane can only have maximum 5 units.

What do you guys think? What do I miss? Sorry if there is any point that has been discussed here but I don't know about. Would love to have a link to that thread, if any.

    Suggestion: Enemy Deployment Prediction

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 01:05 AM PDT

I think it'd be helpful to let you drag your opponent's hero cards in the deployment phase to place them where you think they might go.

Just to help visualise the board so you can place your own hero's.

    Suggestion about the mana problem

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 02:15 PM PDT

My feedback to artifact is to create a Lane mana in addition to the global mana pool. Here is my suggestion:

"Create a lane mana pool that works like this. After deployment phase, the lane gains 1 mana for each allied hero at lane. The maximum mana the lane can get is 3. With this we create more strategy into the deploy and we can do way more things, se we can get back to draw 2 cards"
