    My Artifact 2.0 Beta experience

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 03:41 PM PDT

For context I've wanted Artifact to succeed since the gameplay was first reveal. I even enjoyed 1.0 quite a big despite all of its flaws and ended up logging 223 hours in the game. Even after it died I remained faithful because I felt like the game was a few fixes away from being great. However I'm sad to say that I no longer have that same faith.

Artifact 2.0 makes the game more accessible by simplifying the game and fitting the entire board on the screen but at the cost of what made 1.0 fun or interesting. The simplifying of the lane system really takes away most of the things that Artifact 1.0 got right. Playing all of the boards at once and from the same mana pool takes almost all of the depth out the the Initiative system which in my opinion was one if not the most interesting part of the game. This and the fact that the order which lanes attack now changes takes almost all of the depth out of deciding which lanes to play for. There's no first lane that is more valuable and worth fighting for or a third lane that's less valuable but maybe it's worth playing for in a specific situation. They're all just the same. Artifact's selling point to me before was that it was the deepest and most complex of the major card games (if you can count Artifact in that group). Now it feels just as simple as the rest of the but less fun. I don't know what the selling point of the game is anymore.

I played for 6 hours the day and it was just kind of boring. It's been about a week now and I haven't had any desire to play the game. Apparently others share my sentiment because not many people are playing the game either. If anything I'm more tempted now to go play the original Artifact because I have a greater appreciation for what it got right. And I certainly would have more fun even despite the RNG. Like I said before I don't really have faith any more that this game will succeed because 2.0 feels more than a few tweaks away from being good. I literally don't know where they go from here.

IMO Beta Invite Process is Disheartening, What do you think?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:09 AM PDT

Edit: to clarify, I don't at all feel that I'm owed anything, my point was that the beta invite process has eroded my excitement and enthusiasm, and that if others feel the same way it might lead to less constructive feedback overall. Apologies if I wasn't clear on this point.

I realize that this is probably a very unpopular opinion, and I'm very curious what others think.

For same background, I was a day 1 purchaser of Artifact back in late 2018, and for the most part I really enjoyed the game. There were definitely some flaws (the arrow RNG could be very frustrating), but I still had a great time.

The main reason I stopped playing was the lack of card variety, for me the meta got pretty stale. I put in close to 100 hours into the original game.

Fast forward to the beta. I can honestly say I was super excited to participate and provide feedback, but over the past month as it's become apparent that the number of beta invites has been very limited (trickling out really) that excitement has really eroded. Each week the frustration continues to build. It's really disheartening, and much of my initial enthusiasm has dissipated.

My point is that this beta process might actually be spoiling some of the potential enthusiasm and constructive feedback that is vital for Artifact 2.0 to succeed. For me it's gotten really tiresome, and others on the official discord channel have voice similar sentiments.

What do you folks think? For those of you that have yet to be invited, have you lost some of your excitement? Do you think Valve should increase the frequency and numbers of invites? Maybe I'm the outlier here?

If there's some technical reasons for the slow rate of beta invites (infrastructure, etc.), perhaps Valve should focus their efforts on solving this problem so more people *can* be invited? Just my 2 cents.

I get bored waiting for a match in Artifact 1.0. :(

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 01:06 PM PDT

You wait forever now. In 2.0 there is no competive matchmaking. What is the point of not making Artifact 1.0 F2P? Then it would have at least some players.

Selling it now and especially selling the cards, what's the point of that?

At the moment we have 40 players. Please Valve! It really doesn't matter now. Let us a few lovers the joy without having to invest much money now. Let a few people into the game. Give all who want to play all cards.
