    • What format (constructed vs. draft) does Spot Weakness do well in?

    • What kind of experiences have you had with Spot Weakness?

    • What changes would you make (if any) to Spot Weakness?

    For Artifact Haters sake, let's just left it here...

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 06:01 AM PST

    Sometimes I think "Valve points" are a big reason for Artifact's struggles...

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 11:51 AM PST

    What are "Valve points"?

    Well, I'm using that phrase to describe the "bump" we tend to give something mentally and emotionally because of the source. For example, your favorite band releases a new song and if you didn't know it was them when listening to it you'd judge it more harshly. You hear the plotline for a movie and think, "that's stupid", but then you hear an impressive director is making it or publisher is behind it so you feel more favorable about it. You look at a new game and are unimpressed until you hear that Valve, Blizzard, etc. are the ones making it. Sometimes this is warranted, but sometimes it causes us to be blinded to the truth.

    How often did we hear from beta players, streamers, or even reviews about the brilliance, or depth, or strategy of Artifact only to be immediately followed up with something like, "but it's probably not for everybody..." More and more I'm feeling this was an "emperor has no clothes" scenario where no one wanted to speak honestly for fear of being the only one that didn't seem to understand Valve's new blockbuster.

    Looking back, many of those opinions feel a lot more, "I don't really enjoy this game all that much or get it, BUT it's Valve and it's probably going to be a hit, so I'll just give the reservation it's not for everyone rather than say what I think...after all, I might look foolish later if I did that." It's like eating disgusting food at an upscale restaurant and saying, "well, it's an acquired taste..." rather than being honest.

    I'm convinced that if Artifact had come from a no-name game studio and was given to the same testers, streamers, and players out of the gate that it would have been shredded pretty mercilessly. And this would have been GOOD. It would have allowed them to review a lot of things and change them before launch. But people didn't do that- after all, this is Valve and Garfield: behemoths of the gaming world! They're not wrong, it must be me.

    Even looking at some reviews in retrospect, I can't help but hear the reluctance in the reviewer's voices over a number of choices, but yet they still gave it an overall high score with the same disclaimer that it's "not for everybody" or something similar.

    Overall, I think many people gave this game "Valve points" mentally and emotionally rather than giving it the critical reception it deserved and would have changed the course of design for the better. Valve is now stuck dealing with the harsh failure of the game, and I hope they are getting broad feedback at this point, not just from streamers or pros that are the tiny slice of people still praising most of the game.

    TLDR: People were way too favorable to this game because Valve and Garfield were behind it, rather than speaking harshly early on when it would have helped.

    What I have learnt Playing Against the Best Constructed Players

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 10:58 PM PST

    Introduction

    Hi everyone, I am Littles.Snow, one of the remaining few hundreds who still play the game daily and love the game to bits! This sub has been focused much on the doom and gloom of Artifact and there hasn't been much discussion on how to improve your gameplay and here is me sharing my two cents with everyone. This guide is mainly focused on constructed but many points are applicable to draft too.

    Credentials

    Constructed ranked 70 player, I am still far from being good BUT I have been playing very frequently in tournaments, mainly Mainline Artifact's weekly $500 Ancient Wars tourney (best tourney organisers out there) and have been playing against some of the best players in Artifact.

    General Tips

    • Identify what is your opponent's win condition and whether you have a favourable matchup.Know the different deck archetypes and device your best plan to disrupt their win condition.RG Ramp? Do your utmost best to stop them ramping as early as possible.Mono Blue? Deal as much damage to their towers as possible before they reach mana 6 and take over with their powerful removal. Once they reach mana 6 try your best to kill all their heroes in one turn so that they can't respawn the next turn.

    • Always have a plan for every single card in your hand, do not be lazy and only think about what to do when it comes to your turn.

    • Initiative is of utmost importance in Artifact as it allows you to use your removal before your opponent does, but you do not need it all the time. Plan your turn ahead and if you have to play a card such as annihilation, bolt of damocles, berserker call, you must keep initiative.

    • Which is also the reason why initiative stealing cards are so good, make sure you don't waste those initiative cards! I find having 3 initiative cards in a deck strikes a nice balance. It may be even useful to purposely keep at least 1 hero in every lane even if the lane is won to ensure that you can steal initiative before the next lane.

    • If you have a card such as Red Mist Pillager, Thunderhide Alpha or even Demagicking Maul, only play it when your opponent has used up his mana.

    • Baiting your opponent is a high level tactic that CAN work, such as if your opponent plays agahnim sceptum and you wait till he finished his first round of mana before you smash the defense.

    • Learn how to do mental calculations accurately and quickly. Unfortunately Artifact has a lot of maths involved when calculating if you are able to do lethal damage to the tower.

    • Do NOT let the timer reach less than 1 min, you WILL make a lot of mistakes when pressured for time. Hearing the Red Lady counting down to your inevitable defeat will more than double your blood pressure.

    Mono Blue Specific Tips

    • Save annihilation to get more value lategame if you won't lose by not using it. Example below from u/Swellzong

    • Against Mono Blue, you never want to put more than 2 heroes in any lane as long as there is the risk of annihilation and you do not have initiative. Try to mirror the deployment of Mono Blue (e.g. if they have 2 heroes in 1 lane, put 2 heroes of yours in that lane too so it would be costly for them to annihilate)

    • Try to kill all their heroes in one turn so that they have 0 or only 1 hero left the next turn, do NOT use your removal on them early, it serves absolutely no purpose (Luna is an exception depending on your win condition).

    Please share any more tips which you have and I will add it to this post, Artifact has amazing gameplay and the community is just absolutely awesome. If you feel that there is nothing to grind for, join one of the tournaments and you will get to know other like-minded people who still love Artifact.

    EDIT: Grammar

    EDIT 2: Added Mono Blue Specific Tips section with input from u/Swellzong

    Hypothetical: Artifact went f2p, all cards are now free. What needs to happen to make you feel ok about your loss of money invested so far?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 06:59 PM PST

    I think almost everyone agrees at this point that one of the best things that could happen for the revival of the game is going f2p with free cards. There hasn't been much discussion about what happens to people's collection though beyond giving out cosmetics. Everyone here has got the $20 at very least invested.

    So, would you be happy if you were repaid in cosmetics? Whether that be "foil" cards or a "proof of purchase" hat for your imp or whatever? Would you be happy with no compensation? Perhaps you already feel you got your value for money and don't expect compensation? Or maybe you have a completely different idea? Would it be reasonable to ask for steam credit for packs and tickets purchased? Maybe a signed letter from GabeN as way of apology to all current players is enough to make them feel alright?

    What do you want if cards go free? Ideally and realistically?

    Some stats, R73 constructed.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 12:17 AM PST

    In regards to positive vibes posts lately, and being one that still plays plenty of tournaments and prized constructed i thought to post some stats/winrates and how long has each rank taken for me.
    I play exclusively Prized Constructed and i have less than 40 global MM games since launch or so. I'm obviously waiting eagerly for an update and proper ranking/leaderboards like a lot of us are but mean time stats are kept in my excel doc.

    Rank 70 -> 71. 7w-0l / 100% WR
    Rank 71 -> 72. 145w-60l / 70.73% WR
    Rank 72 -> 73. 22w-5l / 81.48% WR
    Rank 73 -> currently 35w-15l / 70% WR and counting and i'm sure getting to 74 will take a while.
    Total winrate going from 70 into 73 -> 209w - 80l 72.32%

    My overall WR is obviously lower since i wasn't exactly good at constructed when i started, but I've added most of my matches to redmist.gg
    On other notes constructed meta has been fine since launch and there is always plenty of variety in it, sure there are days when you will see more RG or more monoU or a lot of RB/WokeRed, but no day feels the same and it's cheap as ever so if you haven't tried it out yet - go for it.

    I would like to help organize draft nights for r/artifact

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 10:09 AM PST

    I hope to create something for this community akin to Friday night Magic where we can have a free for all draft tournament every week or every few weeks.
    I've always thought that draft is the best way to experience Artifact. I've been drafting with friends for a number of weeks and have participated in a couple of community events, every time its been a blast.

    I think its a shame that we aren't putting the great tournament tools to use in this community, even if it is just a clown fiesta.

    Hopefully we can get other volunteers for other regions and organize events on the discord server.

    Who is the real target audience for Valve?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 08:59 PM PST

    I am not talking about game-wise, not about Artifact. I am talking about the company Valve. Who is its target audience?

    For the old Blizzard, you could say the hardcore gamers who also enjoy rich culture behind games. For many mobile game company or the new blizzard, you can tell the casual gamers who don't want to and don't have time to play complex games. For Nintendo, it is targeted at people who care more about casual but with great playability with a cartoonish art style.

    What about Valve? I thought it is more like old blizzard. However, if you look at Artifact, it is not fun in most cases, doesn't appeal to casual gamers. It has a good story behind but hidden so well that most people don't even know. It could appeal to hardcore gamers but don't communicate much (to assure the future direction of the game ) as other companies (Cdpr for example) should do.

    You can say that Valve is a private company and no real stakeholder asking it to do things, but generally speaking, you always want to earn your trust from at least some specific group of people, so that your games can have a consistent standards, not like Artifact.

    Help me improve my deck

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 12:56 PM PST

    Hello, recently you guys helped me with one of my decks, and I build upon your suggestions and made a lot of progress. Was wondering if you could take a look at this version and see if something can be made even better: https://www.playartifact.com/d/ADCJQAUPrgCkUELAXhduN0BEbgBRpELQkEELgG7AQRciFhgAUdyZWVuL0JsdWUgUmViZWxsaW9u

    The idea of this deck is to flood the board with creeps and heal/buff them.
