[Opinion] Heroes don't feel very unique and interesting Posted: 13 Jan 2019 11:12 AM PST One of the biggest difference Artifact have compared to most other card games are heroes. They are iconic characters brought from one of the biggest game in the world and in DotA, each of the heroes feel very unique and special but in Artifact, I just don't get the same feeling from the heroes. Let's look at 3 main things that make heroes different from each other in Artifact: stats, signature cards, and abilities Stats This is probably the most boring way to differentiate the cards. Most of the time how stats are allocated to heroes boils down to red good, blue bad, green tanky, black stabby. They are mostly there for balance reasons and offers very little unique gameplay options. Signature cards Bit more interesting than stats, these are usually powerful cards that can actually offer unique strategies and thematically makes sense as they are tied to one of the abilities heroes have in DotA. But still they don't feel like they truly "belong" to their heroes as they can be casted by any other heroes of same color. I understand this is because it wouldn't be fun to have cards that can only be played in 1/3 lanes but when I see Meepo casting Eclipse I just go ehhh ok. Abilities To me, this is the thing that has potential to truly makes each heroes unique. They can offer unique gameplay options, usually tied to hero abilities from DotA, and actually "belongs" to their heroes and can only be used by them unlike signature cards. But problem is, they are usually hit and miss. Some abilities such as Tinker laser, Lich sacrifice, and Meepo poof are pretty interesting abilities but other abilities such as LC retaliate, and Sorla Kahn warmonger just comes down to boring stat boost. Some heroes such as Axe and Magnus don't even have any abilities at all! Also, compared to signature spells, their power levels are usually considerably lower. This is most likely due to the fact that unlike signature spells, abilities cost 0 mana to cast and as long as it is off CD, can be casted on demand instead of having to draw them from deck first. This makes hero abilities the thing that can truly make heroes feel special but somehow falls short. So here are my suggestion, since abilities are what makes heroes very different from each other, instead of just having 0~1 abilities, each hero should be given 1~3 abilities. At the same time, since this could potentially make heroes too powerful and hard to balance, add mana cost to cast these abilities. Basically sorta like hero power in HS except it's actually tied to hero instead of player and have CD as well. This would have additional benefit of allowing some abilities to be as powerful as signature cards and also make choosing to use abilities more meaningful decision for players. Right now, 8 or 9 out of 10 times, correct play when one of the abilities is off CD is to use them. By making abilities cost mana, players will have to make more interesting decisions on whether this is the correct time to use the ability or not. TL;DR Heroes feel like missed potential, make them more unique and interesting by giving them more abilities to play around with. [link] [comments]

Why I think Artifact isn't what many expect. Posted: 13 Jan 2019 07:01 PM PST I've been pretty absent in terms of videos and such - work has been busy and it has definitely stopped me from doing much, but also, I've been feeling pretty demoralized by the Artifact community. I've been thinking for a while that I want to make my next video or videos about topics that might help the situation a little and not just banal deck play-through content and I figured this would be a good place to start. With that said, I don't particularly have time to make a video right now, so here is an 'article'. IntroductionSo, I want to start with a couple of questions: 'What sort of game is Artifact?' & 'What game is Artifact most similar to?' I asked the latter question amongst some players recently and received relatively few answers but one thing that I thought was interesting was those that replied often cited very different games. Another interesting point was that someone called it 'very strategic'. That got me thinking about the first question, how should we define Artifact? What sort of game is it? Now some of you might be initially courting the idea of just saying, 'Duh AJ, it is a card game'. Some others might go a level deeper and say it is a TCG. I would argue none of those definitions actually say anything about the gameplay, though, more than anything they describe the ecosystem in which the gameplay resides. In fact, I'd say that the lack of granularity in explaining the experience of playing Artifact is a big part of the issue with its reception / the reason why people have desires to make it into a game it simply isn't. Tactics vs StrategySo what is my answer to the question of what Artifact is similar to? I'd say it is a combination of Go, and Poker. That might seem pretty out of left field - especially choosing not to include at least one TCG somewhere in there. Surely Artifact is _most_ like Magic or something? The reason I don't particularly think so is primarily rooted in the difference between Tactics and Strategy, and the weight which Artifact gives each. Go and Poker are both incredibly deep Tactical games with Strategy being secondary to the Tactics, and I think Artifact is the same. Lets start with some definitions: Strategies: Strategies are the choices that you make based on static information. Static information could include things such as a card pool, a snapshot of the metagame, the heroes you see when loading into the game. Tactics: Tactics are the dynamic choices that are emergent from the interaction of Strategies, and the choices which arise from inputs to the game outside of your control (RNG). Most popular modern card games up until this point have been far more focussed on Strategy than Tactics.(1) This isn't particularly the case for many older 52 card deck based card games such as poker. Poker uses the mechanics of shuffling and drawing random cards to create dynamics such as betting, and that dynamic is extremely tactical in nature.(2) I would argue that Artifact is substantially more focussed on Tactical play than strategic play. This can be seen in the level of RNG present in the game (saying nothing regarding if it is good or bad RNG, I believe it to be largely good RNG), and in systems that encourage radically different play states each game (lanes, the shop, no mulligans). As an aside, I view this as a reason why many players view draft in Artifact to be so fantastic - draft is a format that capitalizes on the strengths of Artifact's tactical focus. Who Cares? So, why does any of this matter? Why is it interesting, even. When most people answer a question about what something is like, they do so through comparison, it is the classic elevator pitch trope of X meets Y. I don't think that Artifact is Hearthstone meets 3 boards. If someone heard that and expected it, no shit they're going to be a bit confused by what Artifact actually is. What you do with your brainpower in Artifact is fundamentally different on a mechanics / dynamics level. This is also a good lens to look through with regards to cards like Cheating Death pre-nerf. Most players were looking at the Tactical pain of that card (IE the impact it could have in making impossible tactical decisions) vs the Strategic pain of the card (no amount of smash, or orbs was good enough for players, and no one was commonly complaining explicitly about the strategic implications of the card such as annihilation + cheating death). Similarly card valuations were initially related to theoretical strategic value rather than tactical options provided, this has changed somewhat with the balance shifts and things such as Jasper Daggers being powerful enough as a tactical option to raise some eyebrows. Tactics focused games are often more draining and 'dry' too, as every decision has its weight amplified, even the small ones which aren't exciting in their own right. This in contrast to the exciting and weighty decision of deck construction to a greater degree in other card games on the market. Deck construction is not as much of an impact in Artifact as MTG, I would argue, which for some people is going to be kind of sad. Most of the game happens during the game.(3) This all matters because some of the audience that thought they'd like Artifact probably don't gel with the level of Tactical focus, and might never. The game will naturally grow Strategically over time, and it might solve the problem for those players but at its heart Artifact will always be an ultimately Tactical experience. It will always be tough for new players to play _well_ and see that RNG really, really, doesn't dictate their games. It will always be tough for new players coming from more strategic games to a place where they can appreciate that every decision ALWAYS matters, even the smallest of things. If you're still in this community and still love Artifact, think carefully about how you frame the game to friends you want to join you - they might have the wrong impression if you tell them it is 'Hearthstone but with three boards' and all that does is stir up discontent when they realize they didn't get the experience they thought they were signing up for. On the other hand, this focus on Tactical play is why I love Artifact, it is WAY more like Go than MTG to me, but with enough of the latter mixed in to be something which feels revolutionary. Thanks for reading, what sort of game do you think Artifact is? What game or games is it most similar to? What do you like about Artifact too? For example I love the RNG and think it is skill testing, just like Poker, and I love the initiative system and think it makes tactical planning really important, just like in Go. - AJ -- (1) I would argue this is even the case for HS which has a great deal of RNG, due to how tight deck construction is, how crazy mulligans are (card by card), and how the class system does a lot of strategic heavy lifting. (2) Naturally, there are many elements of strategy in Poker and Go too (such as Joseki in Go, or playing position in poker), but Tactics are a huge part of the gameplay. (3) This is part of the reason I don't think a sideboard is a good addition to Artifact. It is much less important in a game that already modulates how drastic matchup W/L can be due to its focus on Tactical gameplay over Strategic gameplay. [link] [comments]
Progressive performance drop (memory leak) in the last couple of weeks? Posted: 13 Jan 2019 02:02 PM PST I've been playing and streaming Artifact on the same device (a 2018 Razer Blade Laptop) since open Beta. Never had any problem playing for hours back to back until the last couple of weeks where I am noticing a measurable performance drop the longer I play. After around 10 games, the framerate progressively drops to around 15-20 fps. Closing and restarting the game seems to be the only fix. Very noticeable and very annoying. Has anyone else noticed this? [link] [comments]
Posted: 13 Jan 2019 05:57 PM PST Nobody wants to sit there on mana 9 out of plays and wait another 2 minutes for your opponent to play some shit when you've already lost, it's always in your best interest to surrender and save time if you've 100% lost. Dota doesn't even have a surrender button and they added one to this game while punishing the winner. Volvo? [link] [comments]
Does anyone else avoid the game due to stress? Posted: 13 Jan 2019 06:34 AM PST I started a prized gauntlet and already have 1 loss - 1 win. Now I am just avoiding the mode altogether because I am scared I am going to waste the ticket. My lost game was super close even (lost by a small margin) which also adds to the tensity. I know it sounds stupid but getting stressed about this makes me wanna avoid the game for a while. Also don't want to play Standard because (as they share skill rating with Prized) it will raise the difficulty of the Prized games as well. [link] [comments]

The starters play the first game. The loser is eliminated for the match, and the losing team picks the next player from three remaining challengers. This continues until a team has no players left and loses the match. Playdays will default to Sundays at 7pm ET, but teams can mutually reschedule. Season 1 will start on Feb. 3 and last about two months. Interested? Join https://discord.gg/at2bGDB for more information. Taking ideas from Chess and Poker for competitive side of the Artifact Posted: 13 Jan 2019 04:26 PM PST Chess and poker have some of the most enjoyable and well-established competitive scenes. So lets borrow from them. Playing for MMR alone can be extremely rewarding in Chess. Swiss tournaments are run where every game effects your MMR and you play for small cash prizes and trophies and of course bragging rights. Players are split into brackets of similar MMR. Artifact could do exactly this? We could have 20-40 player 5-6 round swiss tournaments running all day everyday. There could be profile trophies for top 3 places and MMR to be won and lost on every game. If people abandoned there would be a panalty, this would ensure a good amount of people would play until the end (and of course even losing the first 3-4 games, you can still win MMR in your last 1-2 games) Pokerstars has Sit and goes (kind of fast 9 man tournaments) and bigger tournaments running all day every day. Artifact could run similar style fast 16 or 8 man tournaments (find the sweet spot) with either bo1 bo3 maybe even 2 different decks to really test players diversity and in turn be an extremely rewarding experience for anyone playing them. Again profiles trophies and MMR to play for. Artifact has a great chance to make playing for MMR fresh and intersting, unlike Hearthstone and many other competitors which can be a fairly dull experience to climb the ladder or gain MMR with just 1on1 isolated matches back to back to back. Artifact was sold as a competitive game, please be innovative in this area and use the tournament tab to its potential! Also please add leaderboards for top MMRS and maybe even top trophies won and make tournaments in the Highest brackets of MMR visible to public so anyone can watch matches between highest players. World first (?) Constructed level 73! Posted: 13 Jan 2019 11:40 AM PST Just wanted to share with the community. Thanks to my parents, my dog, my opponents ;). AMA if you are curious. Q: What deck? RG, I actually copied the level 72 guy's list. It's 95% optimal. https://www.playartifact.com/d/ADCJcoFPrgCBgpajW67AkKIWxKTQWQBgYExAXIBnHMCiFJHIHY0 Q: Why? Because I hated losing to mono-blue. Q: Record? 55-2-10 since hitting level 72. Q: Was it worth it? Not really, I had to win like 15 in a row. The mmr system is soft-capped right now so probably not worth grinding it out. Posted: 13 Jan 2019 09:20 PM PST Nyctasha, I have three words to say to you: Your item sucks! I mean, Nyctasha's guard is a powerful item but 25 gold is too pricey, I would prefer a Horn of the Alpha or Vesture (and Vesture is significantly cheaper). For those who don't know Nyctasha's lore, she was a goddess who was slain by Bane (a black hero whom we will surely see in a future Artifact expansion). I am not at all surprised that Nyctasha's guard did not save her against Bane's attacks. I say: Nyctasha, you deserved it because of your stingy pricing model. 25 gold!! [link] [comments]

Bought the game yesterday, where can I learn how to play it better? Posted: 12 Jan 2019 11:37 PM PST I won my games vs the two bots, then proceeded to win one out of three games vs players. Playing some kind of mono-blue deck with whatever i have available. Both other games were very close, one i would have won if we got to the 3-rd lane. The other one was vs some kind of combo deck that just stomped my ancient with 111 damage. I am just looking for something that will show me what are my mistakes, if i should prioritize protecting heroes, just to be able to play at more advanced level. [link] [comments]
Your thoughts on Town Portal Scroll RNG ? Posted: 13 Jan 2019 09:22 PM PST Generally I don't complain about RNG, and in fact I think for the most part it has an important role to play in Artifact. But, across a recent number of games (I play exclusively phantom draft) I have noticed a pattern. If in the course of a game I don't get a Town Portal Scroll, while sometime in the course of that same game my opponent does, I will lose the game. And vice versa. I'm not exaggerating. Since I've been paying to attention to this fact, I have literally lost every game where I have not been able to buy a Town Portal Scroll and my opponent has. (In games where we each get a Town Portal Scroll, or neither of us does, those seem to play out at my average win rate). Now granted I am not the world's best player. But still...it seems to me that a game where one player gets access to this resource while the other doesn't ends up pushing the game into a grossly unbalanced scenario, particularly in draft formats. Anyone else experience this? [link] [comments]
