The Dota PIT Organizers Announce a $10,000 Artifact PIT Tournament starting this week!

    Posted: 20 Jan 2019 04:32 PM PST

After stalking this subreddit for months I finally played my first game of Artifact

    Posted: 20 Jan 2019 06:28 PM PST

I got a chance to try the game at my friend's house. I've been subscribed to the subreddit since it was started, not really understanding anything that was said cause I wasn't invested enough to learn about the game. I'd never seen videos on the game before or really read any mechanics so I just jumped in

It was actually surprisingly fun! I enjoyed the phantom draft and just reading all the cards and trying to get a strategy together that would work. The game starts and I didn't realize the timer was like chess and I was scrambling for seconds on the clock in the end.

I managed to destroy one tower and I put up a good fight in the other lanes, but he just had too many units and I couldn't spawn in anything cause they would get destroyed instantly. All in all though, I did enjoy the have a lot even though I don't really play card games.

Currently considering buying the game and just playing Phantom draft cause that was very fun... However I'm trying to save money right now so it'll probably be a while before I make the purchase.

Honest Question: What does it take to get a special invite to these big money Artifact tournaments?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2019 07:38 PM PST

I am sure that most of you have heard about the recently announced Dota PIT $10K tournament, with 32 invited players, many of whom don't even play Artifact outside of these big events. Even the recently completed WePlay Agility event was 18 out of 32 special invites, and only 14 open qualifier spots. This may be a bit of a rant, and I apologize, but I really do want to know how and why these individuals were selected for special invites. It made sense in closed beta for the preview tournament, or immediately after release for the first WePlay event. But not now, over 2 months after the beta opened up, plenty of new players and content creators have come out that focus on Artifact every day!

Some players I agree with, Hyped makes routine tier lists and streams the game a ton. Swim, Ekop, and others also stream the game a quite a bit. StanCifka hosts the $5K bounty tournaments.

But some of them make no sense. Pavel and Feno, really? They are great Hearthstone players, but to my knowledge neither of them has played a game of Artifact since the preview tournament before release. At the very least, neither of them have streamed it, written about it, mentioned it on Twitter, made a YouTube video of it, nothing. Some of the other names like LukasBlohon I recognize from Magic, but had no idea they played Artifact on any regular basis.

At least someone like GameKing, a prominent Gwent player actually played well in (and was specially invited to) the StanCifka $5K event since launch. That's more than I can say about some of them on this list. Some of them I haven't even heard of, and I follow most card game scenes pretty closely.

I am not saying that they are bad players, or bad people to invite by any means, I am just asking: "What have they contributed to the Artifact community?"

I have streamed the game for about 200 hours since release on my Twitch. I have made daily Youtube videos of gameplay, deck techs, and patch note reviews. I write weekly in-depth deck tech and matchup guides on my blog. What have the vast majority of these special invited players done for the Artifact community that content creators like me haven't?

We aren't hard to find, just browse the subreddit and look for who is making the good content, search for regular Artifact channels on YouTube and invite the creators, watch the Twitch page and reach out to those who stream Artifact on a regular basis. I don't think we should give any support to these tournaments that have closed, special invite only, high money tournaments because that model is not helpful for the Artifact community in any way.

I can't take the WePlay casters anymore who keep claiming MaggoGx is a "nobody"

    Posted: 20 Jan 2019 12:09 PM PST

Every remotely competetive Gwent player knows him; the guy sat for ages at the top of ranked ladder for everybody to see and has huge respect among Gwent pro players.

I remember that he didnt take part at big tournaments because he wasnt able to travel abroad for whatever reason.

He didnt have to for this tournament and here we go.

    Item shop rework ideas

    Posted: 20 Jan 2019 01:21 PM PST

Was watching WePlay tournament these days - really enjoyed the event - as a person that came from dota, i'd say it was maybe the funniest event i've seen so far, especially thanks to SirSlacks. But at the same i'm pretty disappointed with lack of diversity in meta (most decks look more or less the same) and rng. Sure new expansions should fix limitation of the base set, but this game at some moments is just an rng fest (Swim finding helm & multicasting thundergod's wrath is a good example). I think this game needs a better ways to adapt to the game situation - and it already has this mechanic built in - the item shop, but for now it's just one more slot machine.

I think item shop might be improved this way:

    1. Provide limited amount of base items per game that's always available (for example 3 tps, 3 heal potions, etc.)

    2. Increase the number of deck items to choose from during the shopping phase (or add the ability to shuffle them with gold).

    3. Split deck items into base & optional and let player include subset of optional items before the game starts (to give player a way to adapt to the enemy deck).

    4. Possibly add more anti-items cards to balance gold based decks or limit the number of items you can but per turn.

Double clicking shouldn't lock in a deck selection. Slacks, I demand my money back.
