Daily Card Discussion - Whispers of Madness

    Whispers of Madness

    Color: Blue

    Type: Spell

    Mana: 2

    Rarity: Rare

    Illustrator: Daarken

Lore: Pierpont always warns me about 'dabbling with things you don't understand'. Most of the time he's being a sanctimonious bastard... unfortunately sometimes he's right. Well, mostly right, I mean I've never died permanently. Ya know, now that I think about it, he's basically always just being a sanctimonious bastard. — Vanessa, Pierpont's Foil

    • What decks/cards (spells/improvements/heroes/creeps) synergize well with Whispers of Madness?

    • What format (constructed vs. draft) does Whispers of Madness do well in?

    • What kind of experiences have you had with Whispers of Madness?

    • What changes would you make (if any) to Whispers of Madness?

WePlay tournament has been a blast to watch

    Posted: 17 Jan 2019 02:59 PM PST

Been having it on in the background at work everyday. You can tell the crew is all having a great time there. Probably the funniest esports event I've watched. The two deck format also brings a lot of variety and unexpected matches.

For people who actually play the game. What is your opinion on the constantly dropping player count of the game?

    No invite tournaments

    Posted: 17 Jan 2019 07:08 AM PST

While watching we play, it's been a common trend for the talent to comment on unknown players being the underdog, or surprised when they win. This feels a bit strange to me. While the invited players are all experienced, these unknown players had to win a recent event to even make it thus far. In my opinion, that is far more skill intensive than having a YouTube channel.

I hope that Valve is paying attention, and that our $1m tournament has no invites sent out. I think if you want to see the best Artifact, everyone should battle it out in qualifiers, and if content creators or skilled players from other games are truly the best, we may see them on the main stage.

Mainline's Weekly $500 is trying something new this weekend!

    Posted: 17 Jan 2019 02:04 PM PST

Hey guys! Mainline's Weekly Ancient Wars is approaching! Just 3 days until our Sunday $500 tournament.

What is this "something new" I mentioned in the title? Well, we decided to do a Draft/Constructed mix this weekend! TLDR, Phase 1 will be draft, phases 2 and 3 Constructed. Keep reading for more info!

    Who?
256 players will compete in two 128 player swiss groups. The top 16 players from each group move forward to phase 2, along with invites such as Swimstrim, Hyped, dpmlicious, Naiman, Tomas, MELO and NikolajHoej to compete in a 4 round swiss. The top 16 players will move on to phase 3 in a single elim bracket bo3.
    First come, first serve.
This tournament is open to all regions.

    What?
*Phase 1 is Draft, Phases 2 and 3 are Registered Constructed
    *Single Match (Allow Draws)
    *Tournament Timer

    When?
    Sunday, January 20th
12:45PM EST we will post the registration links in our Discord. (they have been filling up in under two minutes - be prompt as it is first come, first serve.)
1PM EST Draft begins, ending at 1:20PM EST. Players not drafted by 1:20PM will be removed by an admin.
    1:25PM EST matches will begin

    Where?
Stay informed through our discord. We'll have rules, information, tournament links, etc. posted there. Join our Discord The tournament will be streamed with live casters at: www.twitch.tv/mainlinegg

    Why?
For the love of the game, of course! If that's not sufficient, then for winnings! To start off we'll be providing a $500 cash prize pool per week. The distribution is as follows:
    1st - $250 USD
    2nd - $150 USD
    3rd - $50 USD
    4th - $50 USD

Edit: PS - We have been doing small pop up qualifiers to win a bye to Phase 2! Join our discord to get information and tournament links to those for next week :)

    Some ArtifactCube Stats Analysis

    Posted: 17 Jan 2019 12:04 PM PST

So seeing as there is no API and hence the stats on ArtifactBuff are based only on beta play, our best resource for statistical analysis of the game are the user submitted stats on ArtifactCube. Obviously these are skewed towards higher level players, since you have to actually find the site and go to the bother of scraping and submitting your results, but with a sample size of 454,986 (181,755 since the 1.2 patch) I think we can draw some conclusions from it. I'll be focusing on Constructed here but I could do another look at Draft more specifically also.

In discussing winrates I'll focus on the 1.2 stats and only make reference to 1.0 for means of comparisons. References will be made with the format All/Standard/Prized.

    Constructed

On the latest patch the current highest winrate hero is, somewhat surprisingly to me, Tidehunter with a 64.40/69/65.25 win percentage. Beastmaster is in second place with 64.15/66.46/63.38, so it would seem the buff to Jasper Daggers has not resulted in the downfall of stun focused heroes. Overall Red holds the top 5 heroes, with Axe/LC/Bristle rounding it out. This is somewhat expected since Red features in three of the currently popular meta decks (R/G ramp, Mono Red, R/B in all it's variations). Still it's interesting that the less used heroes Tide and BM (5k games each) are more effective than the obvious Red trifecta of Axe (24k), LC (28k) and Bristle (23k). Perhaps this speaks to the power of Mono Red, since Tide and BM tend to make the cut there whereas the trifecta is more common in R/G and R/B?

When comparing the strength of the colours there's an obvious disparity between Standard and Prized: in Standard Black does relatively better, and in Prized Green (specifically Lycan and Treant) is the colour that sees a boost. This is attributable to mono Black being a competitive but cheap deck, suited to a lower budget player who will usually be in the Standard queue, whereas R/G ramp is expensive and the commonly accepted powerhouse in the current meta so if you have it you'll probably be willing to queue Prized. In the overall rankings Blue appears to edge out Green, but if we assume the strongest competition is in the Prized queue then Green takes the silver medal. The Lycan (rank 3) and Treant (rank 7) core definitely appears to be the strongest Green has to offer though, as in Prized there is a huge gap between them and the next ranked Green hero (Drow - rank 24).

Finally on the timers: the average game time has only decreased 19 seconds between the 1.0 and 1.2 patches. Now, this will be somewhat skewed since "1.2" spans from the December update that balanced Axe etc to now, whereas the timer changes occurred only last week and so the effect is definitely larger than those figures suggest. In Draft the difference is more significant, with a drop of 96 seconds in average game length between the two patches. Average game length stands at 16:37 for Constructed and 17:34 for Draft, again skewed upwards because of the pre timer change games on 1.2. Still, the difference in the new timer doesn't appear to be that huge.

Fartifact Friday of Fun: Rainbow Deck Tournament

    Posted: 17 Jan 2019 11:56 AM PST

Introducing the Fartifact Friday of Fun Tournament, the chillest Artifact tournament ever as of 15 minutes ago when I came up with it.

Here's how it goes: You have 24 hours to prepare the craziest Rainbow deck you can think of and compete in a fantastically fun no-holds barred single elimination knockout tournament. You have one shot, one opportunity for all the spaghetti. We don't know what Swiss is. We're talking 1v1 battles for glory until there's only one deck standing: The most fun (probably boring) Rainbow deck in all of Artifact.

But wait, there's more! It's not really fun playing for nothing. That's why we have a fabulous prize FUNd of TEN DOLLARS. That's like six hearthstone card packs I think. And it's all for the winner of the tournament!

Is that too low for you? Well, tough. That's all I have right now.

If you're interested, join the discord here so I know how many people are interested. The link for the tournament will be posted there on hour before the tournament starts. Feel free to leave afterwards. I'll probably only use it for future Fartifact Friday of Fun tournaments anyways.

For those of you not interested in playing, let's hang out on my Twitch stream. We'll be spectating random games from the tournament together. So you can watch, spam emotes and cringe at my horrid attempts at casting. I'll also try to figure out some minigames like predictions. We don't promise anything grand though! This could very well be three hours of me just sitting there and eating Pringles.

Plus, for the duration of the stream, 100% of the donations made will be going straight to the prize FUNd of Fartifact Friday of Fun! If we cross a certain amount, we'll split the prize FUNd for second and third place winners too. Crowd funding, yeah!

Also, I know I keep saying "we", but really, it's just one person. But "we" makes it sound more professional right? Anyways, if you have some suggestions, please post them here.

    TL;DR

    • Rainbow deck single elimination tournament in 24 hours (12:00 PST). Link will be posted an hour in advance on this discord channel. And probably other channels too.

    • Winner gets $10, all donations during the livestream go to the prize pool (crowd funding baby, yeah!)

    • Spectating games and stuff on Twitch, so feel free to drop by

    • We probably have no idea what I'm doing.

Is it just me or does Artifact feel stuck between a rock and a hard place?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2019 10:45 PM PST

I love Artifact. Plain and simple. I tell myself I won't play and I somehow still manage to squeak in at least one game a day. It gives me a thrill that no other game I've played has given me, especially in close-cut situations. I love improving and learning, watching and drafting.

It's sad to see the game's player base just shrivel up. It doesn't make any sense to me. I haven't spent a cent past the initial $20 though I do plan on spending once I got the hang of drafting and board awareness. I still have a ton of fun and plan on playing the game for a very long time. I would love to have the game with all its cards for free but I see why Valve went with a marketplace system. I would love to reduce RNG but that would also mean every red/black deck I go up against will be awfully brutal. I would love to get some new cards or a new event but we have more pressing matters at hand. Everything I think would improve Artifact has some downsides to it, and I don't see a way to satisfy everyone or more importantly, bring back the player base. Can anyone think of a plan that works?
