“If You Build It, They Will Come”: An Open Letter to the Artifact Community

"If You Build It, They Will Come": An Open Letter to the Artifact Community

Ah, a classic test of narcissism: who is the "you" in that statement? Is it Valve? They built a game. It seems good to great to me. Artifact is certainly a better value than most of games I've paid $20 for in my Steam library. Still, the game is lacking features the player base sorely wants and subsequently has suffered a precipitous drop in user base. A lack of meaningful ranking system hamstrings those seeking to be Artifact professionals and turns away even casuals who just want to see how they compare.

Now, consider: is the "you", well, you? Don't we as a community have some role in establishing a competitive scene or ranking system? Dota and Counter-Strike are legendary in the esports scene. I played CS and DoD when they were still just HL2 mods. The competitive scene did not just get handed to us. Ranked mode wasn't even a concept that existed inside video games beyond arcade leaderboards. It took people like Clinton "Fear" Loomis, grinding away at some shitty desk for years, knowing that one day Dota was going to be a thing. It took people like Jarosław "pashaBiceps" Jarząbkowski giving up "regular" work, believing he could support his family by one day competing in Counter-Strike.

These kinds of people are out there in Artifact, grinding away right now. Players were putting themselves out there on Twitch on Christmas Day because they love the game and can't get enough. I know. I've seen them, even talked to some of them. There are great players and personalities out there who want to compete at this game of cards we all find so irresistible. Yet, when they open the game client to do so, all they can really do is compete at how many hours they have grinded through the skill rating system, if it can be called a system. The social tab is painfully empty. It feels like a giant competition with players from all over the world and a giant venue but the organizers did not spend any time or money organizing the actual event.

We, you, need to build the community if we want to see our own great esports events and competitive scene. Liquid can't do it if no one else is trying to do it too. We all need to get shaking and moving together if we want a deep community to thrive and be an exciting scene. Otherwise I suspect the few Artifact interest groups that exist right now will wither away while we wait for Valve to "fix" a game that is fundamentally sound.

If you are an aspiring pro, keep on playing, the work will show.

If you are a Twitch viewer/donator, consider visiting medium or small Artifact-focused streams.

If you love the game, ignore the haters. It is a brand new year, carpe diem!

I would like to take a moment to commend Stancifka for carrying on the competitive spirit of all sports by putting his money on the line. He is the greatest Artifact player right now. Do you think you are better than him? Prove it, go take his money.

    Artifact Match History Viewer v0.2

    Artifact Match History Viewer v0.2

    Hi /r/Artifact!

I've made a way for everyone to view their current match history, while we all wait for the ability to do it in game. This uses the data currently available to people on their GDPR page of Steam. None of the data inputted into this leaves the program.

Preview of Artifact Match History v0.2

Preferably, I would have liked to have this as a website however I'm inexperienced in doing that and wanted to make this quickly for the subreddit so it's a WPF app. Any feedback or problems, please let me know 😉

    Github: github.com/JoshLmao/ArtifactAPI.MatchHistory

    Download (Latest): releases/v0.3.1

    Please Note!

Currently, I haven't played any Expert modes so I'm unable to get the correct Gauntlet ID's for these modes. If anyone has and can provide it to me, that would be great. Either as a PM on here or create an issue on the Repo, thanks!

Thanks to /u/ZugzArtifact for PMing me the codes. I'll release a new update ASAP

    Weekly Valve-sponsored Tournaments

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 01:31 PM PST

We've got a fantastic in-game tournament client, and I really hope Valve plans to do something like this. I'd love a system in which:

    1. Once per week, each player is allowed to play in 1 Valve tournament for Constructed, and 1 for Draft. Once you have played a tournament for the week, you cannot play another until the reset.
    2. The tournaments would be swiss with 128 players. 7 rounds is plenty for this all-inclusive style.
    3. Just 1 ticket to enter.
    4. Valve could figure out the number of tournaments to run each week that would be just enough to fill up the brackets but allow players to get in and play. E.g. Registration begins at 12:00 CET, and begins as soon as 128 players have registered. Repeat every 3 hours, all week long. This can be regularly tweaked such that a) each tournament fills up in about 5 minutes and b) the vast majority of players get the opportunity to play in one each week.
    5. Prizes would be two-fold: The top 8 players would receive packs (10 packs for 7-0, 5 for 6-1) or something commensurate with the 128 ticket entry cost, and also bearing in mind the prizes for the "Champions Tournament".
    6. The other part of the prize structure is the real reason for limiting the number of tournaments players can enter per week; the ~8 players at 7-0 or 6-1 receive some number of Champion Points. At the end of the month, each player will have participated in up to 4 draft tournaments and 4 constructed tournaments, and potentially earned some points in each.
    7. There's an in-game leaderboard of the months' top Champion Points earners. At the end of the month, the top 128 players for Draft and top 128 for Constructed get invitations to Champions' Tournaments.
    8. The Champions' Tournament could be streamed each month, and have much better prizes. Hell, maybe the top players are the ones who get the invite to the big TI $1M tournament.

    - It would keep players engaged week-after-week to attempt to come out on top in a competitive tournament

    - It's great for semi-casual players who cannot grind every day, but still love the competitive setting.

    - Plenty of things could be tweaked by the Valve folks who have the numbers in front of them. Maybe each player can play 3 per week, rather than 1? Maybe prizes need to be smaller? Maybe 7 rounds is too many for this format?

    - This would come as a net gain for Valve. They'd take in thousands more in tickets each week, and only be paying out prizes in packs. It's exactly what they do for gauntlet.

Personally, I'd feel very excited about playing in a tournament like this once per week, and it would even finally motivate me to get good at Constructed.

What do you think? What would you change in order to make it a system you'd love?

My friend pre-ordered Artifact and got 5 packs instead of 10

    My friend: https://steamcommunity.com/id/Guyver111/

Pre-ordered the game when it appeared on steam but he had not logged in the game since.

He just made his first login and got only 5 packs and 3 tickets. I suppose it's a bug...

Anyone else bothered by how quickly display names get cut off?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 05:53 PM PST

It's a minor thing but only 6 characters before it gets cut off by the icon feels pretty bad. I know you can see the full name at any time so it doesn't really matter but it's quite unsatisfying to look at imo.

The intro/menu/user interface graphics/animations are really well done

Whoever is responsible for the user interface in the deckbuilding you did a great job. Also absolutely love the animated menu screens including the call to arms hologram/3d screen.

You dont rank up vs. winning a better player, you rank up winning against anyone

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 05:47 AM PST

I just went to rank 33 against a lvl 3 player with a pretty bad deck, he was clearly a begginer, making tons of mistakes, so what they told us about ranking up ''Over the season, every victory against an opponent with a higher Skill Rating will raise your own.'' (thats the exact quote) is just not true. Thats not the first time this happens to me, but this was the most clear one.
